  9. When I was younger there was more of a balance. There was more thought in auditioning, to me there was some difference in quality. We have changed. We settle for too little. Quality is no pun intended, mostly cheesy. Yes, there used to be more sauce on pizzas. Now cheese is king. Evevn asking for extra, extra sauce only brings one to levels achieved years ago. It's too bad pizzas don't last. I would love some NOS NIB today.

Craig has just now discovered that the common element in all of his disfunctional relationships is himself! ---------------- Triode: The sarcasm and irritable tone of yesterday, will most likely have this pulled today. It would be nice to have a rational discussion of topologies. But if you go to the beginning, Bob Crite posted "power requirements, D-Man and I were, I believe looking at the same brochure. As Silversport was ignored yesterday, I quoted from the brochure page, paragraph heading and power requirement listed for a K-Horn. I don't cut and paste, but the three watt statement needs to be re-read As does the power requirements listed in that Brochure. There are no listed requirements. My post reflects the language in there. The Dope from Hope is good. But it is not the primary advertising brochure. It contains much more data, but it's like the Biblical one must do enough to help themself - it's not in the Bible. Just as in that one Brochure there are no minimum power requirements listed. That was ignored. A lot of the sarcasm would be better as a PM. I still support the idea that if the listener who pays for the equipment is happy, that's all that matters. The discussion should go from that point and no-one would feel threatened or coerced.

  17. Sony has TTs in the semi newly released class. A middle price also. That only being said as they control much of the music. If they are bringing TTs back, are they hinting? Other Companies are pressing 180 gram vinyl LPs. Taking those factors, add the availability of LPs at Thrift shops plus decent record cleaners and the MM5 or 7 TTs you have a wealth of music.

I do not consider adding a device that will add a certain sound, or change the frequency response, "high fidelity". Again, on the other hand, I have less sensitive speakers, and listen at higher volumes than some of the others. Therefore, I would not choose those topology amplifiers for myself. It would appear that this forum is dominated by a rather conceited lot, possessing very little knowledge or common sense regarding the audio arts. Perhaps you find yourselves entertaining, in a Jerry Springer kind of way. It’s not too far of a stretch to imagine that you have precious little experience with the equipment you choose to lash out at with your thinly veiled criticisms. Ah, the SET must suffer from “compression”. My, my. Look at all the funds wasted by recording studios on compressor limiters, when a simple 2A3 amplifier could so easily be fitted for this purpose. And at a rather substantial cost savings, I might add. If indeed you are able to discern effects similar to compression whilst listening to a SET amplifier, you are exceeding the capabilities of the device. What you are in fact hearing are the effects of clipping. This being the case, your listening habits necessitate a more powerful amplifier, as the common sense limiter has failed to actuate. Microdynamics and driver excursion are inversely proportional. For those of you carping about accurate music reproduction, one could only speculate as to the horrific sound that you surely consider accurate. A Klipschorn driven to high sound levels is emitting significantly more distortion. Combined with the reflected energy contained within the room boundaries, and the natural effects of cancellation, you have quite a cacophony. Ah, you have indeed created the club sound in your home. You should be very proud of how you have managed to reduce a superbly engineered product to a level equal to industrial amplification. Being someone whom earns their worth with my ears, I prefer a similar sound in my home and in my control room. Whilst I consider myself fortunate to own a pair of classic Klipschorns, I do not feel compelled to abuse them, or myself. Although this fact is certain to be lost on you Power Rangers, it is the owner of the small SET amplifier whom has truly come to appreciate high fidelity sound. Something to ponder as you twiddle the pots on your preamplifiers, undoubtedly named after a pie filling. And of course, whilst listening to selections garnered from the uncompressed music aisle of the record store. You may now resume your chortling and back slapping. I hope my use of punctuation has not offended the more unstable amongst you. If your neighbors dog starts giving off about hunting me down, please seek professional help. -Ian ---------------- Ian: WELCOME to the Forum. In defense of EdwinR, I don't believe that he expected 5 pages when he posted an observation. Some would say he should have as the same would happen with cable and a few other subjects. I noted heated debate earlier, I was rightfully corrected, but I was premature in making that statement. I only wish that I could have my belief that whatever makes a person happy in their system Post stored. But it would get ignored anyway, as did the point about hearing sensitivity, hearing curve. There's a point when one wonders why they post - except for the fact of reason. Discussion of Topolgy is a great thing. Then it drops to semi-insults on all sides. Not by all people. But passion for music brings out the language. Though mostly ignored by those here, I will say this is not their normal being. They are helpful, do a lot for little money, take a lot of time to answer a question properly. I hope that you see them in other questions, roles and how they help. I rant. It's a way I have of venting. You'll notice they don't get on my case for it. They understand. Each of them have their own stresses. They really don't need me to state any of their case, but, I've been around long enough to see. Yeah, this topic can be a Jerry Springer - inside they know the person is happy, sometimes it's more trying to understand why. But each paid for their Equipment, so as I usually end, does it matter? Your post was a good introduction to the Forum. I hope that you stay around to see for yourself what I have mentioned. dodger
  22. No matter what or how anyone tries to make any statement regarding any amplifier, personal taste and personal hearing sensitivity and hearing curve have to be factored in. The first has been addressed but the second and third have been pretty much skipped over.
  23. Perhaps heated was not the correct choice. As you Tony, Some days Tube, Some days SS (choices) - if I owned a SET that may be in the rotation. But I don't see PP or SET as the evil doers. Only some low tolerance. This has cooled. It was warmer. I just try to see a balance earlier than when things are spent. I see that is considered more of an intrusion than advocating tolerance. For some reason a number of times that is called into question. I will try to keep it in check. My apologies for miswording.
  24. In all, The question is answered: What the owner finds to be pleasing, realistic, having presence and soundstage. Hearing sensitivity varies, what is closer to whisper to one person can be quite loud to another. Db meters cannot take that into account. Age and related hearing loss are other factors. I do not own SET, as everyone knows, I'm McIntosh. But I do defend the right to own whatever makes a person happy. No matter the Topology. Without being criticized, or being told they are wrong or that their Amplifiers consume too much power - Class A - that their Amplifiers are over or under powered. We may have strong opinions, that IS all they are. This is an open Forum. Not let's change a person's mind - except to change to acceptance. Agree to disagree. There are Mini-Coopers, Corvettes, SUVs, Continentals and Mazdas all on the same roadways. Mansions, small houses, Average. 2 Channel, 2 plus center, HT. It truly amazes me that this heated debate just continues. I'm not saying there should be complete agreement. But it seems much when a negative opinion is stated and re-stated so many times. The question of what may be lacking was raised - in PP, there are better than McIntosh in my opinion. I prefer tube to SS, but that's me. I've heard some very good SS. A number of posts note that tube is better with Klipsch as most likely only the first couple of watts will be used. We own what we own.
  25. Granted I cannot cut and paste, however I did quote what the conflicting power needs the brochure states for the K-Horn. That is in addition to what Bob could cut and paste. There is the point of no power recommendation, the efficiency and one other thing - specifications available upon request. The DFH is one good thing, but it was not the marketing tool with power statements available to the public. The selling tool. It has been a number of years since the statement regarding a good five watt amplifier was made. There have been some improvements.
