Crossman
Why does the Khorn woofer face a piece of wood with a narrow slit? Wouldn't it be better if is was completely open?
twistedcrankcammer
Why does the Khorn woofer face a piece of wood with a narrow slit? Wouldn't it be better if is was completely open? Crossman, The whole idea of a K-Horn is that it is a fully horn loaded speaker!!! The Bass Bin is a folded "HORN". Blow into a trumpet, and how loud is it?? How musical??? Now remove the mouth piece from the horn and blow through the mouth piece only. How loud is the mouth piece now??? If you have to yell at your extreme loudest, to get someone attention from a distance in a croud, do you not cup your hands at the sides of your cheeks to focus your voice to get it to the other person?? These answers are very over simplified. The size and the length of the horn also help tune the frequency response of what is heard, and can be seen in the length of the horn in various brass and wood wind instruments. Forcing the sound of the 15 inch driver through the "slit", is to make it into a compression driver. Roger
djk
"Why does the Khorn woofer face a piece of wood with a narrow slit? Wouldn't it be better if is was completely open?" The narrow slot improves output near the 400hz crossover point, at the expense of low end. It's a design trade-off. You can download Hornresp and monkey with it if you want to see the effect. http://mywebsite.bigpond.com/dmcbean/
Don Richard
The slot causes compression of the air in front of the driver. Basically, the area of the slot and the volume of the back chamber match the driver to the horn flare for proper operation of the horn.
