dubai2000
Okay, the sound of tube amps (to be more precise the sound of 300Bs) got me hooked. Slowly but steadily all standard Chinese tubes were replaced - the sound got better and better. But if you have ever wanted to see a technical newbie, look no more: now that I got three different sets of 300B tubes I finally got to know that tube rolling isn't enough, but that if your amp doesn't do it automatically, you have to reset 'bias' (correct word?) for each tube. So...how??? What do I need (my amp doesn't have any inbuilt meter) and where do I get the necessary data for each tube? I understand that the amp's distributor/manufacturer might help, but with a number of tubes at hand I'd really like to learn (and hope I won't do any mischief as I have really no technical knowledge/skill at all). So Mobile and others, please help!!! To confuse me even more: someone told me that with SET amps one doesn't have to readjust bias - of course I forgot the reason he mentioned - so, any comment on that? Thanks in advance for your patience. Ray Garrison
You need to adjust the bias to the correct parameters for the tubes you are using. Not doing so will ensure you are not getting the best possible sound, and depending upon how far off the settings are, might reduce tube life substantially, might significantly impare amp's performance, might do other nasty things. I cannot help you with how to do that with your amp, or what to do, but this guy might: http://www.megabaud.fi/~jtolonen/index.html I'd drop him an email. ShapeShifter
I do know that Welborne Laurels are self-biasing and will automatically adjust their bias to any currently available 300B Tube.
