3D front projection -- does it really require a different screen?

The manufacturers are barreling ahead on 3D like a Toyota running wild.
How can they hope to make this work in the middle of a recession?
But .... having saved up for a few years, we were just going to buy fabric for a DIY 10 foot wide projection screen, and a projector, but who knows if the following are true:
  • 3D front projection requires a silver projection screen, and uses regular Polaroid 3D glasses, not the shuttered kind used with flatscreens
  • Because of the above, the image would be darker, everything else being equal
  • The screens can't be acoustically transparent
