I stopped when I bought a house, had a kid, and realized that there was just no time for it anymore. I sold a few gems piecemeal a few years ago, then unloaded the rest of them (around 3,000 or so) for about 1/5th of what I should have taken for them, just to get them out of the way. They really were not as compelling to me when I ran out of time to read them (and was just collecting)... I collected as a kid, lost all my comics, then started again as an adult. I collected until about 2000, still have a few, but dumped most of them to put a down payment on my house.
