Which are the "must have" DVDs?

Kain

Recommended Posts

Currently, I only have "Gladiator", "Gone in Sixty Seconds", and "The Patriot" on DVD. Frown.gif

But, I will be buying "The Matrix" and "Star War: Episode I - The Phantom Menace" soon. I was just wondering what other DVDs should I add to the list? Smile.gif

That's kind of a trick question and you will get a number of responses. I say trick because most people will give you the names of movies that have geat sound or video, and/or special effects. My list is mostly movies that I actually think are good movies...

Air Force One in Superbit

American Beauty in DTS

Almost Famous in DTS

As Good as it Gets in DD5.1

Braveheart in DD5.1

Bridget Jones's Diary in DD5.1

Dances with Wolves in DD5.1 THX

Das Boot in DD5.1

Die Hard (Five Star Collection) in DTS w/THX

The Fifth Element in Superbit

Gladiator in DTS-ES

Good Will Hunting (Collector's Series) in DD5.1

Jerry Maguire (Special Edition) in DD5.1

Matrix in DD5.1

Saving Private Ryan in DD5.1

Terminator II (The Ultimate Edition) in DTS-ES

U571 in DTS

These are just a few of my favorites that I own. There may be different formats now on some of these as well. I'm sure you'll get a bunch of others to chime in here...

Hi Kain64,

Yes Yes, those are good movies. Here are some of mine as well that I recommend for great sound and picture. Some even have repectable stories.

Here we go:

Memento in DTS

Vertical Limit Superbit. (Excellent sound and great shots)

U-2 Evolution tour (Live in Boston) in DTS Fantastic sound.

Starwars Ep 1. The opening THX video will blow your mind and the pod race is fantastic sound demo material.

Sarah Brightman, La Luna in DTS. Again great sound and a real good concert DVD.

Mission to Mars in DD 5.1. Neat story and great sound.

Matrix. Everyone knows about the matrix.

The Jackel in DTS. Can you say Ouch.

Heat DD 5.1 Excellent bullet rechocets in this crime drama.

Rocky Horror Picture Show in DD 5.1. It's an aquired taste.

Even Harry Potter has excellent sound. There were parts in this movie where I actually ducked thinking I was going to get hit in the head by something. It's a kid flick but it's very well done. Im 44 and I enjoyed watching it with my 14 year old daughter.

Anyway, there you go. I'm sure I could list many more but I'll leave some for the others to list.

Take care

Rick

Ok call me a sap if you like, but, must we forget Titanic? I have it and Saving Private Ryan on my Fathers day wish list.

Oh and also Kain, in my humble opinion... Titan AE Great sound affects. I have preached it in the past, yes I know, but the Ice Rings ( I think thats the chapter name) has some excellent sound affects.

boa12,

Yep I forgot that one... The Eagles, Hell Freezes Over. 100% I agree with that.

Prior to ever seeing that DVD, I used to be of the mindset that the eagles were good. I liked them. They were just a band that was ok to listen to on the radio. But that all changed the day I seen that DVD. We were at a home and garden show here in Portland. They had a home theater setup playing that DVD. I stopped out of curiosity. I stayed because I was absolutly blown away at the talent I was hearing from that band. They sounded so incredible that I gained an all new respect for them. As a matter of fact, I just watched it again two nights ago. Still I marvel at how talented they are and how good they sound live.

Also, I got to thinking about this, they were much younger when they wrote thier music. I sat and analized their music as I watched and again I was blown away at the complexity of thier music. Even back in the 70's when there were in their youth, they had such a mature sound.

Blah blah blah, I just can't say enough about them and that DVD.

I also have yet two other DVDs to add to the collection.

That Free DVD from Pioneer

The Dolby Digital DVD (purchase at www.dolby.com)

IMHO, here's my list:

Pearl Harbor (skip the mushy junk, just watch the bombing scene and dogfights)+ THX tests

Rush Hour 1 and 2- they're just funny

Jurassic Park III- T-Rex/Spino fight sounds incredible- the bass.... OOOOOHHH!

The Rock- Car chase scene is very impressive.......

Ocean's Eleven- All around good movie- songs are really bassy in it....

Of course there's probably more, but I can't remember them. I, too, have a very small collection right now.
