barefootpoet
Did the original dust cap on the 15WK have 'EV" or "Electro-Voice" printed on it? I recently acquired a decent 15WK with what looks like the original orangish-colored surround but a plain black dust cap. I know the 18WK had 'EV" on the dust cap. Just trying to determine if this speaker has been repaired at onetime. Thanks
djk
www.electrovoice.com/downloadfile.php?i=970309 The data sheet photo shows none, but the line drawing has one.
The Dude
did you do a ohm check to make sure it has a 4 ohm voice coil.
LarryC
did you do a ohm check to make sure it has a 4 ohm voice coil.Good idea -- 15WK's could be reconed either as a standard (16 ohm?) or a "horn only" 4 ohm item. I wondered about that, too.
barefootpoet
Having the ohm of the VC read is a good idea. My brother-in-law has a ohmmeter. I'll let you know.
barefootpoet
The ohmmeter flickered from 2.9, 3.7, and 4.3. My brother-in-law said he hadn't seen one do that before. But at least the VC is 3.2 ohm
The Dude
Does it have the EV15WK stamped on the back.
barefootpoet
Correct, there's a "k" stamped after the 15W
djk
"My brother-in-law said he hadn't seen one do that before." The more efficient a woofer is, the more likely it is to behave that way (act like a mic and generate voltage).
barefootpoet
That's good to know, dkj. The speaker is h -e -a -v -y and one of a kind. I hope to have it installed in a Centurion IV corner horn soon.
The Dude
I wouldnt worry if it had been repaired sounds like if it has, it was done wright.
LarryC
The speaker is h -e -a -v -y and one of a kind.It sure is! It's the only bass driver I've ever heard that pumps out fabulous, clear, and natural bass just sitting on the floor without even being in a cabinet or baffle. It's a real treasure IMO. barefootpoet
Thanks for the help, guys. It's amazing that a 50+ year old speaker is still considerably more "sdvanced" than contemporary designs. PWK certainly put the glitter in the Golden Age of Hi Fi. Johnlw7
I have a set of Ev 15 TRX speakers in mid century cabs. They have some of the smoothest bass response I have heard.I am going to put them in an 8 cubic cabs and let them really open up. John Warren
15WK Good little woofer but don't push them too hard, they will break and your done.
John Warren
Cone factory cone part number is 7270, printed in white letters directly under the speaker terminals.
barefootpoet
The number on mine is 73377
barefootpoet
John yours has the "EV" logo on the dust cap. The surrounds are also black. Perhaps my orange colored surrounds are not original either.

LarryC
I'm struggling with 50-yr old memories here, but I think that surround WAS a Klipsch 15WK, while the standard 15W did not have them. If that's correct, it might have been part of EV's manufacture of the "horn only" 15WK model. Also, the 15WK had to reach above 1,000 Hz, and perhaps the surround was part of extending it that far up. I heard one 15W many years ago, and it sounded very muffled to me. Besides, its range had mesh with a 500-Hz xover point in the K-500 midrange horn in the K-horn, AND the 1,000 Hz mid-range horn in the Cornwall and Shorthorns of around 1960. Hopefully, someone with greater knowledge will chime in. The 1959 -1960 K-horns and Cornwalls were incredible speakers, with that 15WK. Sadly, EV discontinued those huge alnico models and substituted a much lighter, cheaper, ceramic magnet model, and those great speakers were never the same. I have always wished that Klipsch would source a 15" model with the old EV's strengths, and engineer the xovers to match. I think the current K-33, while very good, is feeble in comparison. I'm sure economics and the market have made it impossible since 1960.
