Adding an equalizer to a home theater receiver

You may be disappointed with what you hear. Some EQs have a bad effect on the clarity of the sound.

I had an EQ connected to my 1970s receiver, but when I hooked it up to a 1998 receiver, it had a sort of dulling effect on the sound, so it became less clear. After a week or two of listening, I disconnected it.

My original reason to add the EQ was to boost the bass on my old speakers, but that's not a great idea anyway. I later added a sub, which gave me the bass I was looking for, and then I used the EQ in the line to the sub, to help fix some dips and peaks in the low bass area, where the dulling is much harder to notice.

I am considering adding an eq as well. I run an external amp and will install the eq between the amp and receiver/pre-amp. This way it will only eq the the fronts. I would expect if you use the tape loops it will eq an channels if you are using a surround sound format. The eq could always be put into by-pass for that.
