Dr Morbius
Hello, I have a choice between 2 turntables for purchase. Anyone familiar with the Empire? I am a little familiar with the 1218 as my room-mate in college had one. Thanks... Steve
Schu
I'm a sucker for vintage... since I have a modern TT already, I would get the empire.
Chris A
Anyone familiar with the Empire?I've got an Empire 398. The 698 was the fourth generation replacement for the 398, IIRC, after the 498 and 598. The specifications for rumble on the 698 are -68 dB, compared with -57 dB for the Dual 1218. That performance difference should get your attention. BTW: the Empire 398 that I own has a rumble performance number of -90 dB. That design was apparently very expensive to manufacture. It's the quietest table that I've ever heard. Wow and flutter are very low. I still use the original arm which works extremely well--after I cleaned out all the crud of 50 years of congealed grease/oil and embedded dirt with a WD-40 bath. It's solid brass--mechanism and all. I would bet that the 698 arm is just like it. Chris
