tube fanatic
This is a video of Kate Smith singing God Bless America. She certainly put her emotion into it! I can't even count how many radios I've restored which played this song when it was done live...... http://www.youtube.com/watch_popup?feature=player_embedded&v=TnQDW-NMaRs
billybob
Recall looking at that recently and enjoying the nostalgia. Guessing it was only tubes back then. Like her Bill Bailey too. Excuse my memory but the expression when the fat lady sings came from her singing. No disrespect. Maybe just a little portly was a better term. Thanks
Mongo171
I hear her sing every 7th inning during Yankee home games.

When I mentioned it to a friend, he said that it was not correct and sent this link: http://www.phrases.org.uk/meanings/it-aint-over-until-the-fat-lady-sings.html

So, not as cut and dried as Kate Smith. Brunnhilde, now that is a strapping lass that may be closer. Rather obscure, yet used in a lot of situations I come across. Sorry Kate! My bad...maybe. Daddy Dee
TF, thanks for the link. Not sure if I'd forgotten or just didn't realize that she introduced the song. Back in the mid to late '70s my landlord in Atlanta was a retired guy of some age. He was from Vermont and back in the day had been a speaker on the Chautauqua circuit and Kate Smith was on the same program.
