L98Z28
Trying to take the driver out. The driver is in there so tight that when I tried to lift up on where the screws go I snapped part of the metal frame. The mounting surface and gasket are all lifted off the cabinet. The driver just won't move. When I pull up on the outer part of the driver it only lifts up as far as the rubber will let it
CECAA850
If you can get the amp off, see if you can look inside. The only thing I can think of is possibly the driver magnet hanging on some bracing.
CECAA850
I found this.
L98Z28
Well it's out. It's not blown either. I figured out what's wrong. Basically the entire frame of the driver is cracked/broken. If I can figure out how to load pics using a an iphone I'll post pics.
CECAA850
It probably took a hard fall in shipment somewhere. The weight of the magnet can do some serious damage during the sudden stop after a drop.
L98Z28
Here's some pics. And no the sub was not dropped or abused in anyway. Looks like a very bad casting to me the way it cracked and broke
CECAA850
Just looking at the pictures it appears to be damage from a drop. You said you just got it? Did it ever work correctly? If so, a fall could have cracked the frame and playing it just finished it off.
CECAA850
A bad casting would have reared it's ugly head years ago. The sub must be close to 10 years old I'd imagine.
L98Z28
I think I'm gonna just try and JB weld that frame back together
L98Z28
It was shipped to me strapped on a pallet. The box pallet showed no abuse and seller had it packed very well. Maybe that's what happened. That magnet is huge.
jason str
That sub was dropped at some point. Not worth repairing, get a new/used driver for it. JB weld may work for a little while but its not going to hold together long.
Heritage_Head
Here's some pics. And no the sub was not dropped or abused in anyway. Looks like a very bad casting to me the way it cracked and broke Holy balls! Why would klipsch not use a cast iron driver in a sub like that? Plastic seems very cheap for a big driver like that. EDIT: I guess from the pics it looked like it. But after reading more it sounds like its not. My bad Edited June 11, 2014 by reference_head
CECAA850
What makes you think it's plastic?

L98Z28
I will be buying a different driver. The two on eBay are already getting expensive, and I'm worried the same thing might happen if I buy the whole package. I hope I can find someone who will part one out and just sell me the driver. Cheaper shipping and better for the driver. I'll try the JB weld and see how long it will last. Hopefully I can find a driver by the time it fails. You could ask him to take the driver out and send that in its own box. That would keep it from doing that.
Heritage_Head
In fact I have seen people do that on other rf speakers.
L98Z28
Called klipsch today. They do have a brand new driver for this 379.00 with free shipping. Idk I think I can find something cheaper.......
Heritage_Head
That is a lot. But I would buy it. Save you time and bs thinking about it. Do it and be done.
L98Z28
I'm really thinking about it. The guy I bought the sub from filed a claim with fed-ex. It was insured. So we'll see if anything comes from that. I'm just happy I can still get the driver form klipsch if I go that way.
