The History Kid
The time has come for me to move forward on the rebuild of this console for my grandma. The decision was made that the amplifier should be replaced instead of restored due to the massive amounts of work necessary to restore it, and the difficulty to find the parts. The drivers that are currently in the cabinets she's got are fine, but won't withstand the wattage of most amplifiers. The Heresy cabinet will fit perfectly snug into where the drivers currently are. I'm looking for any generation or KP's within driving distance (about 5 hours tops) from 52806. Her max budget right now is $350. Anyone looking to offload to an old lady who wants to listen to her records again? Edited April 26, 2015 by IbizaFlame

Thaddeus Smith
within driving distance from 52806. might want to specify your radius in mileage. many here will spend 12 hours each way to get speakers multiple states away..

You can replace the amp with one the current setup can handle if you have trouble finding Heresy's or KP-201's within budget.
The History Kid
Sounds like a plan mustang! I'll have to call on you guys to help build a crossover though, as I believe the crossover is built into the amplifier based on my findings inside. OO1
A kp101 would be a cheaper alternative and sufficient for the console - you would need a pair -
OO1
I forgot to ask - how big are the woofers in the console -
mustang guy
I was thinking that too. You would need to run some simple test sweeps to find out the range and efficiency of the 3 drivers, then design a crossover that works for them.
The History Kid
I reckon I can work that out. I would think a 101 would sweep as well as what is there now.
mustang guy
I have never measured one, but I seem to remember that bass extension was pretty good with consoles. I wouldn't be too sure that even a Heresy could go as low as what you already have. Is there any way you can check the woofers in the cabinet for low frequency extension? The History Kid
I would need some software recommendations to do that most likely. Those Xovers are built into the actual amp, and the woofers are a part of a loop through the whole speaker structure. Your thoughts are akin to mine though, I was/am somewhat concerned about how deep they go. The woofers are 10 or 12" right now - they were a sealed design too. mustang guy
If I were doing it, I would connect a regular stereo speaker wire to one of the woofers and play a pink noise and look at an FFT graph. You can get an app for the FFT part. Just look at the graph and you will know what the woofer can do.
The History Kid
I might take a bit to do that tomorrow to check. Am I basically looking for replies below what the KP or the Heresy would put out?
mustang guy
Pretty much. The Heresy starts to roll off at about 80Hz and rolls off pretty sharply at 65Hz. I know it specs at something like 50Hz but that is being very generous IMO. It will be interesting to know what you find out. I have never measured a console, but I remember them having good bass usually...
The History Kid
Well the results were actually quite disappointing. Things started to notably drop after about 90 Hz and crashed after about 70 Hz. By the time it reached 50 Hz it was showing -80 dB. Seems like this might be a sideways move? mustang guy
Not a lateral move. The Heresy is substantially better. The Heresy is down about 6db at 50Hz which is right at 6db/octave, since at 100Hz it is dead even. A Heresy II or a KP-201 would be about -5db at 50Hz. It's funny how the Heresy II and the KP-201 claim around 60-63Hz which is actually more accurate. The Heresy is claimed at 50Hz which is definitely not. The History Kid
I did find a pair of KP-101's in my range (probably the same ones Randy was showing me), but they seem to bottom out at 75 Hz...would I be okay with this since the console crashed at 70? mustang guy
Yes. Those would work great. If you want more bottom end, you can always add a sub later. Those didn't exist in the day of consoles.
