Difference between La Scala II and Khorns

Recommended Posts

I want Bach on the organ to sound "full figured".)

Then you really do want Khorns, and perhaps horn-loaded subs someday.  The Khorns will certainly support that habit.

Quick question: Anyone know of a reliable seller of used Khorns?

Not really.  The lower the price, the more risk you take.  If you watch places like AudiogoN, you might find a really good pair listed, but the price will be high:  ebay and craigslist are the sources where you pays-your-money-and-you-takes-your-chances.

I'd recommend watching ebay, and the Garage Sale Alerts here on this forum.  Sometimes merely listing a "want to buy" (WTB) ad in the garage sale area here, you might find a forum member that is looking to part with a pair--usually a redundant pair that they've been storing somewhere.

The problem is that Khorns are typically not shipped but picked up by the new owner--due entirely to their size and weight.  If you want them shipped, then it gets a lot more involved.

Chris

The only reason I don't have either. Have always wanted a pair of Khorns (ideally) or LaScalas - which in my opinion are the most visually distinctive and beautiful speaker Klipsch has ever made. Have found a couple good deals, but living in the Northwest Territories shipping is the killer, often close to the price of the units themselves. One of these days I hope to find a pair in Edmonton which is "only" a nineteen hour drive down south.

Just remember - as bass wave lengths are extremely long.....true horn loaded subs are extremely big!!!!!

Understand that my comment was only in passing, i.e., not part of the OP's question.

As for horn-loaded subs...I've got two DIY versions of these basic designs and they don't take up any room at all behind the Jubs:

;) You had me fooled until you said Danley (LOL!!!). I was telling myself - how could he put a big horn behind Jubs!!! That sub is not very deep (as in length not sound)....but it's very tall and very wide....yeah - that's big enough :D!!! If you have those with a LaScala, it would give a Khorn (by itself) fits!!!

I'm interested in this sub - pm me and let me know you built them!!!! Did you go passive or built-in amps? Wood type, that's a nice project right there!!!! :D

I can do it here:

https://community.klipsch.com/index.php?/topic/126476-tapped-horn-sub-woofer-build-spud/?hl=spud

and

https://community.klipsch.com/index.php?/topic/132935-one-more-spud-build-they-call-me-tater/?hl=spud

DIY is on this page - two one-page drawings toward the bottom of this thread: http://www.diyaudio....?postid=1698483

The drivers are Tang Band W8-740P (8" diameter): http://www.parts-exp...FTOKEN=79351136

The cost of materials for two TH-SPUDs was a bit less than $500.00 - all you need is a table saw, a router, a drill, and some clamps.

Enjoy!

Technically, the only difference between the two are the bass horns.  They come with the same drivers, mid/high horns, and crossovers (or at least can use the same).  The bass horn of the Khorn allows for deeper bass frequencies.  However, it isn't just deeper bass that sets the speakers apart.  The Khorns will also provide for a bigger sound stage.  In this case, the final product is more than just the sum of its parts.  The La Scala is a great speaker, but the Khorns will take you to another level.  I do have to say that I have never heard the La Scala II so my comments are in regards to original La Scalas as compared to the Khorn (which I have owned both models).  One weakness of the La Scala is that at higher volumes, there will be some resonance of the side panels in the cabinets.  The La Scala II may have corrected that problem with the thicker walls.  I never experienced that with the Khorn.
