kenratboy
OK. near my house, they are building a new High School. There is a main enterence road to the construction site. There are two gates, both of which quickly join into a common road, both gates are identical, EXCEPT: One gate is for UNION contractors. One gate is for NON-UNION contractors. Both gates are identical, it's not like one leads to a formen's shack or parking lot, they just join into one common road at the othe side. WHAT THE HELL IS THAT!!! Why can't grown men and woman use the same gate to get to the same road? WHAT IS THE PURPOSE? Are these children!!! Hmmm, drinking fountains for blacks and whites... ------------------ Receiver: Sony STR-DE675 CD player: Sony CDP-CX300 Turntable: Technics SL-J3 with Audio-Technica TR485U Speakers: JBL HLS-610 Subwoofer: JBL 4648A-8 Sub amp: Parts Express 180 watt Center/surrounds: Teac 3-way bookshelfs Yes, it sucks, but better to come. mike stehr
The local Aluminum Smelters had a union strike about a year ago or so. The non-union replacments had to go down the same road that was lined up with striking union workers throwing rocks, setting down nails, yelling profanities, fighting, blah, blah, blah. These were just a few isolated incidents, although it wasn't pretty for some time. The Sheriff's then hung out for the strike. I agree with you, The two entryway's for non-union and union to possibly avoid tension between the two is dumb, especially when they meet in the yard. Bad Grammar edit, Duh! kenratboy
Yes, I see your point, BU THATS NOT HOW THIS WAS SETUP. I don't know anything about unions (nor do I care too much) but the gates were 10 feet apart and went to the same parking area, the merge was about 10 feet inside the gate. If Justin will host, I will take some pictures tomarrow. I will bring my union made Chevy to keep the cursing down, the Subaru (though built in Indiana) may not be the best choise. It is almost comical. Justin, will you be a kind digital host. Also, check you mail, I forgot to fufill an obligation. ------------------ Receiver: Sony STR-DE675 CD player: Sony CDP-CX300 Turntable: Technics SL-J3 with Audio-Technica TR485U Speakers: JBL HLS-610 Subwoofer: JBL 4648A-8 Sub amp: Parts Express 180 watt Center/surrounds: Teac 3-way bookshelfs Yes, it sucks, but better to come. kenratboy
Solved:s> From an Audi forum: The reason that there are separate entrances for union and non-union stems from the National Labor Relations Act and a case in 1961: Local 761, Int'l Union of Electrical, Etc. vs. NLRB (1961). Without boring you with legal mumbo jumbo, the case basically involved a GE plant that was having many things done to it by different contractors at once, some union and some non-union. By maintaining separate entrances, the union workers, if they ever go on strike, CANNOT block the non-union entrance and attempt to prevent the non-union contractors from going in and working. Of course, this only applies if the non-union workers are the type doing work that is NOT production work and does NOT relate to the operation. Painting the walls would be non production and does not relate to the operation of the building. To sum up: Union cannot strike and block the non-union entrance if the non-union employees are secondary workers (like painters, etc), but the union CAN strike and block the non-union entrance if the non-union employees are doing primary work (plumbing, structural, etc.). Make sense? See, law school did pay off! ------------------ Receiver: Sony STR-DE675 CD player: Sony CDP-CX300 Turntable: Technics SL-J3 with Audio-Technica TR485U Speakers: JBL HLS-610 Subwoofer: JBL 4648A-8 Sub amp: Parts Express 180 watt Center/surrounds: Teac 3-way bookshelfs Yes, it sucks, but better to come. TBrennan
Ken---The explanation is correct. Also another reason is so that a Union picketing the non-union gate can't picket the union gate. Let's say a Union puts up an informational picket at the non-union gate. Now if a common gate is used the Union workers won't pass the picket even though it's informational and not a strike picket. So with a seperate gate for the non-union workers this is avoided.
