Yammy question RX-V870

Picking up a Yamaha receiver on the cheap tomorrow.

Question: The "front" out/in RCA with the hard jumpers. Are these actual pre-outs that can be used for an external amplifier for the front channels? (pictured lower right)

Nice to have a decent little "kick around" receiver to collect dust, even better if it has pre-outs.

In some of the first gen yammies, you disconnect the jumpers, and you lose all the other channels as well. You cant just drive fronts with external amp and the other channels with the on board amp. They have it wired forward - front channel jumpers carry all the signals, the rear is fed by that after the jumpers.

On the next gen - DSP 3090 on - You disconnect the jumper and you lose the fronts but all the rest keep working. Ideal to run fronts with an external amp and the rest with onboard amp. The thing is wired "backwards" - As in the 3090 can run 2 centers. Rear center and front center. They have the front center on an external jumper. Same with the front (or is that main) Don't immediately remember, but one of the 3.

This really works well if you are ever intending to run a bose 901 and EQ I found. The massive power you need to run to the 901 as well as the external equalizer they need are tailor made to be run that way.

Cool.

Yes the OUT goes to amp......Or you can use the IN for the onboard amp. I also use a phone plug to a phone with RCAs on the other end to run to an amp to test speakers. Sometimes on the OUT you lose the tone controls.

Hmmm?  all interesting...

I am only concerned about the front 2 channels.  No interest or need for rear and such.  However, it sounds like on this particular model one could just use a splitter to carry the full signal to an external amp while leaving all other functions ready for use, as well as tone control to the external amplifier.

For 25 bucks though, a decent score for a little amplifier with options :emotion-21:
