Kain
Yeah, LOL! You know the Creative DeskTop Theater speakers? Yeah, those ones. They come with a so-called "subwoofer." Instead of connect their amp to the "subwoofer," I connect the wire to the LF post of one of my RF-7s. WOW! These babes have some SERIOUS bass of their own! And this was with only a computer speaker amp!! There were some "pops" and so I stopped. I only did this for like 5-10 mins. Now I have disconnected it and re-attached the orignal "subwoofer." I can't wait to get the Denon AVR-4802 to see what these babies can really do!
Kain
Oh yeah, I stuck in "The Matrix" while I had it connected and...GEEZ WIZZ!
Kain
By the way, is this harmful for the RF-7?
Orange Peel
Dude, don't do this kind of stuff with $2k speakers! Either go and get a cheap $199 reciever or wait until the Denon arrives, your gonna really mess something up one of these times. Those computer systems may run on a different Ohm load than the RF-7 does, and it may not be the best thing to run the Rf-7 off it. If you really want to know how they sound, I'll email you my address, send them to me and I'll tell you. Just keep them wrapped up until you have a "real" reciever. Kain
Yeah, I was thinking the same thing. I guess I'll just leave them "packed away" for a while till I get my Denon. But it's sure hard not to "fiddle" with them!
Kain
By the way, do you think I have caused any damage to the speaker due to this? Remember that I only did it for like 5 mins.
justin_tx_16
probably no damage done. but don't do it again please that amp is rated at 4 ohms.
Kain
Probably?? I hope 100% sure no damage was done. Anyway, I'll just leave them alone till I get the Denon. By the way, what were those "popping" sounds??
justin_tx_16
amp clipping
Kain
Oh! Thank you! I thought I had messed up my RF-7. No more risk taking!
justin_tx_16
when a high powered amp clips, it can burn up your voice coils. just food for thought. not sure what this kind of clipping could do, likely nothing.
Kain
Well, I wouldn't call this a high-powered amp cuz it is used to power 5 watts speakers.
justin_tx_16
5 watts at 4 ohms remember though how a QUALITY 5 watts, if they clipped, could be disastrous. sometime efficientcy is not so great haha. don't worry though. just get a real amp and then you are REQUIRED to giv eme pics to put on my site! prodj101
you're tourchering those speakers, and I don't see why. Hooking up to a comp amp is one of the worste things you could do.
boa12
i think what we have here is a low powered amp being over driven to clipping. that could damage your speak's tweeter voice coils more than anything. ok to use a low power amp, but not ok to drive it to clipping. best to use a high power amp to avoid clipping when you want louder. Kain
Ouch, I am getting scared. By the way, when I did connect the RF-7, I removed the bridge and connected the wires only to the LF post, thus the horn/tweeter was not being used. boa12
"connected the wires only to the LF post, thus the horn/tweeter was not being used." good thing. if you were clipping the woofs imagine what that would have done to the tweet horn. think your rf-7s will be fine when you get a real amp though. Kain
Ah! I am relieved! No more "experimenting" with RF-7s!
TheEAR
Kain, The POS PC speaker amp module you were using has as much power as a good headpone amp. LOL You will not damage the woofers in the RF-7's,these bastards can take a whoopin from an amp,the only part you can stress is the cheapo Uncreative amp. Get a real receiver or ATI 1505 to power these RF-7's,then you will feel the power.BTW buy the 4802 first and then add an ATI 2505.Ha,or get the best receiver going the Pioneer 49,has it all plus does not cost more then the Denon 5803. BTW stop using cheap Uncreative pieces of poop to power quality speakers, its a shame. If you have the money for good speakers buy a great receiver or pre/pro with a power amp. Kain
TheEAR, THANK YOU! That is exactly what I wanted...a confident "NO" to the question if I had damaged the RF-7. By the way, how much does the Pioneer 49 cost?
