New home theater plan...but is it any good?

I’m currently finishing my home theater room and will be starting construction on it next week in our basement. I’ve been looking into affordable yet quailty home theater systems and have created what I think is decent, based on my budget and what I’ve been able to find online and through forums. I will readily admit that I am largely inept at the whole AV world so please feel free to offer advice.

Here is what I am currently planning on getting.

Marantz SR7012 AV receiver, that features 9.2 channel capability, 125 wpc, Audyssey for test tone generator calibration, pre-outs for possibly adding a 220w or so amp for extra speakers and providing sufficient power, Atmos/DTS:X capable, 4K upscaling, Bluetooth capable, etc. Alexa compatible is nice but not necessary.

Klipsch 7.1 RP-250 Reference Premiere speakers with R-110SW sub. I will also be adding height ceiling Atmos speakers, Klipsch CDT-5650-C II, either 2 or 4 speakers, and an additional and larger sub, Klipsch R-124W 400 watts. I’m planning on a 7.2.2 or 7.2.4 configuration.

Does this look reasonable and like it would work well together? Am I missing anything or is there something better in the same price range that I should consider?

- If you're going with more than one sub they should all be the same.  They will sound much better and be much easier to set up to balance out the sound.

- If you're going with 7.x.x your side surrounds should be a wide dispersion design such as the RP-240s or 250s.  Your rear surrounds should be a direct design such as the RP-150m or 160m.

- If you go with a 7.x.4 configuration you will need an external amp for the extra two Atmos channels.  The receiver only has nine configurable internal amp channels.

The RP-250 system is decent.  Being the smallest of the RP series it won't produce theater level sound.  If you don't like to listen really loud or have never had a home theater before you'll probably enjoy it.

Thank you for the input Wuzzzer. I appreciate the advice. The only home theater system I’ve had before is a $300 box kit from Wal-mart so I can only go up from there! I will get the same subs like you mentioned to make them work better together. Is two ceiling speakers enough or would the 4 be better?

So wide dispersion design for the sides and direct dispersion for the rears. Does that mean the RP-250 is significantly lacking in those areas?

I’ve reconfigured my proposed system to incorporate those changes. I could only find individual pieces and not a “set” so not sure if there’s something better for similar price. How does this look:

Klipsch 2x RP-280F rear floor standing (direct dispersion?), 4x RP-240s for the sides and wide dispersion, 1x RP-450C center channel, 2x R-110sw subs. WIll run me a little over 3k just for that, which is my upper limit. Same receiver as posted above. Oh and the 2x Klipsch CDT-5650-C II ceiling Atmos speakers.

Ok so something like this:

Fronts RP-280F X2

Center RP-450C X1

Sides RP-250s X2

Rears RP-160m X2

Sub R-110sw X2??? Do I need two?

Ceiling CDT-5650-C II X2

Ouch its getting costly! How does the set up look? Are any bundle type of packages out there that can drive down the cost some?

I would buy all the speakers you have listed, except for the subwoofer/subwoofers. I would use that system without a sub and keep an eye out, on the used market for a better/larger subwoofer. You don’t need to have the subs match the rest of the system, if fact, you can get much better results if you don’t.

10” subs just don’t cut it for home theater, especially in a dedicated room. Speaking of the room, how large is it going to be?

You don’t seem open to my suggestion, which is totally cool and totally your prerogative. It’s your money after all.

Knowing that, I would put your entire budget into a higher quality single sub, than duals of the subs you have mentioned.

I had dual Polk 505’s in a old Definitive Technology 5.2 system I had a few years back. I totally enjoyed them, don’t get me wrong, but I was soon bit by the upgrade bug. The 505’s were replaced by a Rythmik FV15HP and that was when I realized the bass I was lacking with the Polks.

Pretty sure I was open by looking at other brands when before I was just looking at Klipsch for subs. This is why I ask questions is because I know I’m not experienced like you guys are and I appreciate the advice. At the same time, subs are also pretty expensive so I also need to make it fit a reasonable budget. I was advised that two subs would provide better results than just one, but I’m still learning the process and finding out what would be best before I decide and make the purchase so that I can have best results without too much regret. Your experience and those of others here is valuable.
