TBrennan
Zandern----I'm sorry, I misunderstood your motives and ideas. I apologize for tarring you. Speaking of paint I'm reminded of an old Southern saying "too poor to paint and too proud to whitewash". :-)

BBB
I bought some used paint once. It was in the shape of a house Ha haaaaa. I liked that one Tom. So why did it take me 7 days to get it? Who on earth knows. Maybe its because Ive been busy trying to shape what was once a house into an igloo. I think Im giving up on trying to clear the driveway everyday. In fact Im ready to give up on the whole mess. I think Ill just throw a top hat on the roof and attach a carrot to the front door and keep the entire White Castle as a giant permanent Christmas lawn ornament. My time on the chainsaw has taught me a new craft. Ice sculpturing. Ill sell postage stamp size hamburgers out front to cover the electric bills. Now where to get the meat? Ah Ha ! Good dog! Fetch it! Go fetch it!..Good Fella. Hey Henry, Henry, hurry up will you? My mother's gonna make some fried peppers and sausage for us. Oh hey, Henry, Henry. Here's an arm. Hey, here's a leg. Here's a wing. Hey, what do you like, the leg or the wing, Henry? Or do you still go for the old hearts and lungs? Thanks for the thought and line em up Joe. Youve won the Colonel Sanders Employee of Winter Award. Want chipmunk, pinecone , hold the lettuce? Special orders dont upset us. Fries with that? All Eagle Scouts with Alaskan survival merit badges eat for half price. Cabin fever? MOI? Nah. No way. Im used to the isolation. So whats everybody doing for New Years Eve? Im looking to buy a snow blower that doesnt work so the time will pass faster. Hey! Wheres that thread where everyones talking about drinks? Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh! Ray Garrison
ProDJ, uh, you said "...you miss the point. sure, burger king and micky d's might not be the best place to work, but you could get by, and while working jobs, go to college, and after college get a real job..." You're really off base here by about a zillion miles. I am 48 years old. I have been a technical professional in the IT sector for over 20 years. I helped build 2 companies (ComputerLand of Connecticut and Western Massachusetts between 1978 and 1984, Micro Networks of America in 1985), both of which were successful, went to work at the local Utility company as the Senior Computing Support Specialist from 1986 to 1990, founded American Payment Systems, a subsidiary of that utility, in 1990 and built it into a $40 million dollar business over the course of 7 years, then co-founded Freshnex.com, a B2B Internet company. I had worked myself up to the point where I was earning a base salary of $125,000 per year, with goal related bonuses in addition to that. I had a nice home, a wife (who is, unfortunately, disabled), a 17 year old daughter and a 3 year old foster son. For reasons beyond my control, Freshnex was closed down. During the final, painful months, I depleted my family's entire savings in an effort to continue the company, and to meet payroll for those employees who were depending upon me and the other officers to provide for them. Ultimately, we couldn't save it, and Freshnex collapsed. I had no savings left, a $2,750 mortgage, car payment on Wife's car of $550, car payment on my car of $450, electric bills, phone bills, insurance bills (had to pay for our own insurance to the tune of $900 / month when Freshnex failed), daughter's tuition, typical costs associated with 3 year old, etc. etc. etc. I could not find work in the IT industry - in connecticut, there are soooooo many laid of IT professionals, and so little work, that any job opening attracts (and I'm serious) literally hundreds of applicants, and the simple fact is that most people consider me too old and too overqualified for the positions that do open up. I started my own business with a couple of partners, but it takes time to build a new company. I did what I could to reduce expenses (Wife went from driving new Mitsu Montero to driving 8 year old Dodge Caravan, I went from Subaru SVX to 10 year old Dodge Shadow, had to move daughter from private high school to public school, sold all my audio equipment, and so forth), but the mortgage was beyond my ability to meet. I came within a rat's a** of being out on the street with my family, homeless. Working at McDonalds or Burger Kind or some other "entry level" job would have done nothing to help me meet my financial obligations, and would have diverted my time away from building the new business. just because someone works hard and strives for success doesn't mean the twists of fate can't render them homeless. BBB
Just because someone works hard and strives for success doesn't mean the twists of fate can't render them homeless. Pay close attention to what Ray just said boys and girls. VERY close attention. If you are walking around with a that could never happen to me attitude. Think again. And again . And again. Its happened to millions of Americans. Hard working people who thought such a horror could never enter their lives are now finding it impossible to make ends meet. These minimum wage jobs and unemployment insurance are good for putting inexpensive food on the table for a few months. Thats it. If you think Im wrong then try it yourself. Get up from in front your computer monitor ,put on a coat, walk outside with absolutely nothing but the clothes on your back and the change in your pockets, pretend Mom and Dad and Grandpa and Grandma dont exist, look for friends that have abandoned you that you helped in the past and try walking to where ever you think you are going because you no longer have a car. Let us know how far you get before that uneasy feeling of wanting starts creeping into your mind. Its very sad but very true that this is reality for many people. Im not talking about bums without skills who have no desire to work and intend for society to take care of them . Im talking about lower, middle and upper income earning Americans who have worked hard most of their lives at the same job no longer have a home to sit in with their families during holidays ,birthdays or just a weekend barbecue. You can disagree with me all you want about this however if you have never been put in this situation YOU, I mean YOU, (not some relative you know) have no idea of what you are talking about. Try walking a mile in another mans moccasins on the dark side of town before forming an opinion. Cant happen to you? Yeah. Right. I just hope no one else we know will look back one day and have to say I should of listened. Prepared? LOL. This is happening to people that thought they were prepared every day. Rags to riches was a dream. Riches to rags is becoming common place. Try it some time and find out what a sickening wave of panic that overwhelms you and your loved ones feels like. You have been warned boys and girls. I truly wish only the best for all of you.

Basically, this guy's life is ruined just because some idiot decided to drink and drive, and he wasn't even driving! He was simply riding as a passenger in his mother's car. Pretty sad, but a very clear example of how something completely outside of ones control could render them homeless. Fortunatly for this guy, he does have family and friends that is doing everything to help him out.
