Cheap active 3-way.

Recommended Posts

I’ve used a Yamaha HTR-5540 for the past 20+ years as my main amp in the living room.

It’s been ages since we’ve had any surround speakers set up and while the Yamaha still sounded good I felt like the LaScala’s in the living room deserved a little better.

A few months ago I bought a little Aiyima T8 DAC/preamp and A07 chip amp from Amazon and was using them to power my 81 Heresy’s in the bedroom office.

I replaced the Russian tube in the DAC/pre with an NOS JAN 5670W tube.

The T8 pre has just enough inputs that I can use it on the living room system.

Optical from the TV for the kids XBox and Nintendo Switch.

Coax SPDIF so I can use my old Blu-ray player for CD’s.

Analog RCA for my turntable.

USB for hi res Apple Music from my laptop.

Bluetooth for casual streaming from my phone.

However, I found a stockpile of some old gift gift cards so I ordered two more A07 amps and an open box Dayton DSP-408.

After applying Roy’s previously recommended PEQ settings for the LS bass bin, and running some measurements to get the mid and tweeter dialed in, I think it’s sounding pretty great.

Time to forget about the gear and go listen to some more music.

Are those really 300 wpc?

No, that’s some sort of wishful thinking scenario with a bigger power supply and running at max distortion.

IIRC with the 32V 5A power supply they come with they put out around 70 watts or so which is plenty for the drivers in the LS.
The add on Amazon says 160watts with the 32v power supply but I think that’s max and not continuous.

Here was where the EQ settings have ended up(so far).

The room modes in the lower frequencies are really prevalent and cause the measured response to vary greatly depending on mic placement so I'm going to leave the low end alone for now and just assume that Roy's measurements and suggested settings are better than what I could come up with on my own until I have a chance to study the room issues more.

No sub in there yet? The dip at 200 is pretty sharp.

The dip at 200Hz isn’t there when I measure close up to the bass bin itself and the dips move around depending on mic placement so I think it’s the room modes at play.

no sub yet.
