For under $5000?

There are a lot of systems you could get for under $5000.

B&W CDM NT:

Paradigm Reference Studio:

Dynaudio Audience:

Those are just the ones I can name off the top of my head. There are many, many more. Since speakers are very subjective, I couldn't say which one is best.

I've heard these:

Onyx Rockets - http://www.av123.com

* sounded similar to Sonus Faber but lower price and they have dipole surrounds and a bigger center. Nice Vifa tweeter.

* manufacturer to consumer direct for value

Onyx Reference Series 1 & 2

* actually haven't heard these but appear to be more neutral and musical oriented.

* manufactuerer to consumer direct

Sonus Faber

* Grand Pianos ($2300/pr dealer floor demo)

* add their center and Walls or Concerto/Concertinos

* sweet highs

* nice bass and soundstage

Vienna Acoustics

* Beethovens ($2500 Audiogon--$4500 store)

* walls and center

* very detailed bass, great with acoustical instruments and voice

Martin Logan (the setup I heard was more expensive but I've seen Logans on Audiogon and ebay.

* very detailed

* need to be in the sweet spot

* loved the sound from the panels

* didn't hear as much bass sound

B&W Nautilus 804's

* great highs

* a little boomier in the bass

* pricey brand

KEF Ref Series

* the 201, 203, 205, 207 are all seem too expensive at the moment

* after hearing the $15K 207's I missed the bass in the others

* older REF 107 at $1500/pair would be worth investigating

Definitive Technology

* like for HT but not for 2-channel

* very little treble

* rather have SVS subs than integrated subs

* didn't like integrated subs for music

Infinity Intermezzo

* similar design to Def Tech but not bi-polar

* more treble and higher price

* similar sound to DefTech w/integrated sub but more treble

Paradigm

* already mentioned

* good value--esecially if purchased in Canada

Monitor Audio Gold Ref

* richer sound than Paradigm

For hometheater I would recommend going a rather unconventional direction and using active studio monitors all the way around. My system consists of Mackie HR824s ($650 ea.)for the front/rear and a Mackie HR626 for the center ($700). I am using a Klipsch Rsw15 for my subwoofer, but you could easily go with their 15" model which retails for $2100. For right around $5000 you would have arguably the most accurate hometheater under $20k. If you take into account the fact that you will not need an amp to power the system they are that much more of a value. There is no passive hometheater speaker package that can compete with an equally high quality active design regardless of the price difference. I have compared my Mackies directly to passive designs which retail for three time their per pair price only to go home reassured of my purchase time and time again. If you truly want to hear movies the way they were mixed this is the only way to go. They are just as impressive for music also.

wow, lucas using a NON thx certified speaker. From www.thx.com

Manufacturer Category Model Status Region Special Notes Type

B&W Loudspeakers LCR Speaker FCM 8 Certified Worldwide Ultra

B&W Loudspeakers Powered Subwoofer 800ASW Certified Worldwide 2 Required Ultra

B&W Loudspeakers Subwoofer PCS 8 Certified Worldwide 2 Required Ultra

B&W Loudspeakers Surround Speaker DS-6 Certified Worldwide In/On Wall Mounting Ultra

B&W Loudspeakers Surround Speaker SCM 8 Certified Worldwide Ultra

the 802's are not certified.

I've always liked the way B&W sound on music, but not movies. Too laid back for me.

I've clocked my Mackies at over 100 db hitting 34hz and they were still cruising. According to specs they can play as loud as 125 decibels. I couldn't push them much harder as I currently live in an apartment and have to live there for another couple of months while my house is being constructed. These speakers are also Thx Pm3 certified. I personally cannot enjoy the Klipsch for music as they are too forward and bright sounding for my ears especially at higher volumes.
