What years did the klipschorns come with metal horns?

Thanks for the replyes, Looks like since they are metal I might give that rope calking a try.

How much rope calking should I put on the midrange horn? Should I start at the back by the magnet and go say about 3 or four inches up the metal horn, or do I need to put more on?

I found it most important to dampen the wider sections of the horn rather than in the narrows by the driver.

Don't worry about putting too much on.

IMO - Give them a listen for a month or so before you dampen them.

I did not know that the K401 was used in the late 80s. My mistake.

As for comparison, I have not done so personally and can not comment first hand. I do have a friend who has moved away from Klipsch over the last decade and builds his own wood and fiberglass horns. I can tell you he prefered the sound of a dampened K400 over the newer K401. The next time I see him, I will ask him why.

Maybe our own Q-man would be one to ask.
