arfz28
What years did the klipschorns come with metal horns, mine are 84 models, what do they have in them metal or fiberglass? What years did the fiberglass horns come into play?
Johnny dB
My '84 Khorns are metal. I don't know when they changed to plastic, sorry.
j-malotky
Your '84s should most definetely have the K400 Aluminum squawker horn. I believe Klipsch went to the K401 in the early / mid 90s. JM
artto
The K401 seems like a good idea. Anybody have any experience comparing the K400 to the 401?
J M O N
I have 1987's with the K-401. I also have 1978's with the K-400. I haven't had the opportunity to compare them.
arfz28
Thanks for the replyes, Looks like since they are metal I might give that rope calking a try. How much rope calking should I put on the midrange horn? Should I start at the back by the magnet and go say about 3 or four inches up the metal horn, or do I need to put more on? j-malotky
arfz I found it most important to dampen the wider sections of the horn rather than in the narrows by the driver. Don't worry about putting too much on. IMO - Give them a listen for a month or so before you dampen them. I did not know that the K401 was used in the late 80s. My mistake. As for comparison, I have not done so personally and can not comment first hand. I do have a friend who has moved away from Klipsch over the last decade and builds his own wood and fiberglass horns. I can tell you he prefered the sound of a dampened K400 over the newer K401. The next time I see him, I will ask him why. Maybe our own Q-man would be one to ask.
