Here's the shows on the Pollstar list for that week. I starred my recommended shows. There will certainly be more to be announced, as there is still some time before these shows happen. Some good acts appear on this list!

As clubs go, Buddy Guy's and Kingston Mines are the first to come to mind - but Blues is as easy to find in Chicago as the pizza!!

Here's the Denver list.

BTW, these can be pulled up on Pollstar.com - you can search by city, date, or artist. When searching by city, be sure to include "surrounding cities" so all of the suburban sheds and such will show.

I sincerely hope there is something you like at Red Rocks - this place is incredible!!!

Buddy Guy's Legends (downtown, south side)

Rosa's (north side)(down & dirty freindly small club. take a cab)

Eddy Clearwater's Reservation Blues (north side)

The Green Mill (near north suburbs) jazz

Kinda depends on where you are staying.....I know plenty of others, but how far do you want to drive or cab?

(actually, one of my bands used to play at Buddy Guy's. We were also in the finals of his "Best Unsigned Blues Band Contest" didn't win). 7.gif

AARTO,

We stay at a hotel I forget the name of but it is about 3 blocks south of "The Drake" near Rush Street as I remember. A short walk to the Bang and Olufson dealer.

June 23-26 Are the dates I will be there.

All specific recommendations cheerfully accepted.

Rick.....best is to remember to contact me a week or 2 before. I've played in plenty of blues bands & some jazz in the Chicago area. I know a lot the guys personally. The club (not those larger venues)schedules will be out end of May & I can better direct you then.

But, from that location, The Green Mill, Kingston Mines are good bets. Redfish, more restaurant & bar than a music venue is right down the street (south) near the river. They sometimes have good bands there. Harry Carry's, Smith & Wollensky Steak House & House of Blues are near Redfish (Marina City area). As you probably know, HOB is more about rock than blues. The blues acts are mostly downstairs, the best ones, on weeknights. Some of my friends bands have been playing at Kingston Mines lately. Too bad you're not here a few weeks earlier. The Chicago Blues Fest baby!

Buddy Guys Legends is just south of the main central expressway (Eisenhower, I290)into Chicago, behind the Hilton.

On a live Chicago music note, I just walked in from...And You Will Know Us By the Trail of the Dead at the metro. Damn. That was some good stuff. Sort of like Weezer teams up with HUsker Du. Opening act Murder by Death was great too.

This was a WLUW show and it sold out the Metro. For all you Chicago folks who can't stand the normal crap on the radio PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE check out and support WLUW 88.7. The clear successor to XRT.

Hey AF it sure would be easier to help if we knew what kind of music you are usually in the mood for.

If you are going to be in on the night of the 26th, I am probably going to check out Sleepytime Gorilla Museum and Volta Do Mar at the Double Door (generally one of the cooler clubs to check indie bands). Let me know if you have any interest.

**EDIT**

oooops. I see you did. My Jazz recommendation stands. Check Green Mill out. I won't drag you out to the above show

I'm going to take exception with you on the WLUW thing Kev. I gave it a listen. WLUW is apparently a puny "community" college radio station on Chicago's far north side (near Evanston). I couldn't receive the station in my car in the NW burbs. From my home, the signal is weak (can barely hold a stereo signal). I have a stacked array of two large Winegard antenna on my roof. Furthermore, this station is at the end of the dial. We all know that the stations at the end of the dial have less commercial success.

From their web page:

M I S S I O N

WLUW is a community oriented, pro-social radio station, committed to the Jesuit philosophy of ethical action, whose broadcasts fulfill the social justice and service learning initiatives of Loyola University and the Department of Communication.

One guess. What does W LU W stand for? hmmmm, just couldn't be L oyola U niversity now could it?

Plus, their program lineup.....sheesh.....

Here's a random sample from their program schedule:

6:30 AM-

7:00 AM- Contact

A weekly Jesuit series which "builds bridges among those who struggle for a better life".

7:30 AM-

8:30 AM- Chicagoland Radio Mass

Holy Family Church presents an hour long live Catholic mass.

10:00 AM-

11:00 AM- Torah and Song

A study of the Bible from a Jewish perspective hosted by Loyola's Dr. Chaim Ehrman

9:00 PM-

10:00 PM- Open Books

An hour dedicated to the pleasures of reading hosted by Donna Seaman of the American Library Association. Open Books airs on the 2nd and 4th Sundays of the month. (I think I'd rather listen to the Grateful Dead Hour, & then House of Blues Hour in this time slot on WXRT)

11:00 AM-

12:00 PM- The American Popular Song

Elizabeth Conant plays hit songs from the first half of the last century.

I don't think I can remember the last time XRT aired a program that dealt with "A study of the Bible from a Jewish perspective" (LOL, probably because there never was one).

I agree that XRT may have gone downhill in recent years, especially since Evergreen Broadcasting bought them out (which is probably why I've been listening to WFMT more lately), but I'm not sure where you think this is the clear successor to XRT. It is NOT. Its just a college radio station. (And one with a particular religious bent no less)

Rick mentioned in his first post that he was primarily interesed in jazz & blues. Places like the Double Door or Metro are primarily for indie/rock bands.

Geez. Thats an awfully cranky reply.

OK you did find the crappy part of luw's schedule and it IS a college staion. I coul've guessed but did not really think about its broadcasting limitations...I just don't go to the burbs enough to know.

The fact is xrt is becoming crap. There dj's are increasingly limited as to their input in the programming. The song choices come from on high like all the other corporate owned radio. OK I definitely don't go for the programming you mentioned on luw, but they DO have great hip-hop, modern latin, and indie rock programming blocks that are SCORES better than listening to the bands over and over and over again. you know the old saying about xrt peaking in its first year and going downhill since,..well I don't know if I would agree with that but I do know I turn it off more often than up. I give them credit for the dead programming, jazz transfusion, and their support of Zwan, but overall find their programming safe and boring. Its like Q101 for the older crowd.

Listen to luw (at the right hour i guess, try nightime, that seems to work for me) and it is like double door or metro on the radio. And its all done by a bunch of kids with real enthusiam and knowledge. I should mention that, as a former Rogers Park resident, I also greatly enjoy their sunday morining Live from the Heartland show at Heartland Cafe. It's npr-esqu commentary with quests on current events (local, national, and internation) and, owing I am sure mostly to location of the show and type of station, has a lefty edge. Whether you agree with the politics or not, they support and are involved in my community and that is nice to see. They also provide a forum for A WHOLE LOT of great music that wouldn't get a shot anywhere else. Like xrt (used to).

Look, I'm just excited about the option this station provides this city. They are consistently putting quality indie music on the air and arranging great shows to supprt the bands. The station is getting ALOT of attention in the city. It is the focal point of the rock (read non-large venue scene). Just college rock? I don't think so. I'm not in college anymore (I'm 28) and neither are any of my friends and we are all diggin this staion. Among other types of music, I like my rock. Especially indie type. q101 and 94.7 puts out polished junk that makes me feel like a sucker for listening to. Are there exceptions? Sure (Queens of the Stone Age jumps to mind). But don't tell me that Linkin Park, Limp Bizkit, Audio Slave, Creed etc. are just as market-tested as NSYNC.

Clear successor to xrt? OK, maybe that was a bit too enthusiastic. I don't think you reply was entirely fair, though. Allow me to provide this to address your somewhat edited presentation of WLUW's schedule. You might note that although you seem to make a valid point within the context of your post, it adresses about 7% of the total WLUW schedule.

KEV,

I cannot handle the punk and metal the way i used to.

Clash, New York Dolls, Ramones, Oingo Boingo, Sex Pistols and the like...

Nasty Blues electric guitar I still find very melodic. This is the genre i would like to see in Chicago.

Be happy in Chicago; Detroit radio is the worst it has been in my lifetime. The only new music station of any merit is broadcasted from Canada.OOFF

Grand Rapids and Lansing are better but I cannot recieve them in my home due to the distance. I get them when I am out and about traveling the state of Michigan on business.

Kev, while I appreciate your (post) college age enthusiasm, and I do in fact appreciate (& even listen to) all kinds of music, this WLUW station can barely reach the NW burbs (which is not that far from Chicago's north side), much less the south side of Chicago. In fact, here in the NW burbs, WLUW is very close in broadcast power & frequency to Wheaton College Radio (another religious oriented school). In the car, around here, Wheaton gets picked up. At home I can fine tune either one, both are weak & about the same distance (albeit different directions).

While you may consider my response "cranky", the fact of the matter is WLUW is not even a "commercial" radio station (as in a real business). Nor is it the "cutting edge", progessive (or underground as it used to be called) station that you implied. In its hay day, XRT was far more progressive than ULW. Some college radio stations may be more progessive than the likes of XRT. Loyola University is not one of them.

I didn't find the "crappy part" of its schedule, I simply just cut & pasted a few items from their schedule at random, without picking. There's a lot more talk on that station than music. Look at XRT's Sunday morning schedule. Where's the Catholic mass? WULW is just a dippy college radio station (from a conservative college no less) & it can't even reach most of the city or surrounding areas! And you say this station is getting a lot attention in the city? Sorry Kev. I'm directly involved in alot of the Chicago music scene. And have been so, for longer than you've been alive (no offense). Everything from cover & original rock (indie) bands, to blues, to recording, even things like classical/choral. I don't have the time, nor the desire to expose myself to every flash-in-the-pan band that comes along (average life of a band is about 6 months, 3 months of rehearsing & preparation, lining up gigs, etc., & 3 months to implode). If it hasn't come across my radar screen yet, on its own, its still a 'nothing'. What you've got there is just a north side community, conservative college radio station that barely reaches 10-15 miles under the best conditions. If it weren't for the music content, WLUW wouldn't be a hell of a lot different than WMBI. I'll let you find out what that one is on your own.

Ciao

Your response says alot artto. You haven't seen it so its nothing? ok. I just didn't realize you were so big.

You are assuming an awful lot in your post. Is luw associated with a jesuit institution? yes. Does that make it radio with s religous attitude. Well, I guess you picked out the shows that are faith centered (or whatever). I personally never heard Loyola's religous orientation play into their station. That just must be the time I listen. You mention conservative and associate either the radio station or the school with Wheaton College and Moody Bible. Well, I'm not sure what you are trying to say with that, but if you are trying to imply it is some type of bible thumping forum, nothing could be farther from the truth. In fact, as I posted, any type of politics displayed is of a liberal nature. As you can see from the rest of the schedule, there are programs that cater to all sorts of ethnic groups and sexual orientations. Not quite the type of play you would expect from Wheaton College which is more often associated with institutions like Bob Jones U. They do have an outstanding liberal arts program tho.

Look, this isn't a forum for me. I'm certainly not trying to push off any religous beliefs. Hell, I'm not even Catholic. Accordingly, I think you can drop your assumption that this is some type of bible network (which although you did not expressly say, I think I see your thinking by the way you directed me to Moody). Let's be fair Artto, when you say, "If it wereb't for the music content LUW wouln't be all that different that ," you are really missing my point (or working too hard to make yours whatever that may be - I think it is just to disagree). I AM referring to the music content. You may note that that is the overwhelming majority of the LUW schedule (although, again, you might not realize it from your "random" cut and paste of the lineup).

All in all it's a pretty simple. If you like indie rock, LUW should be your station in Chicago. Like I said before, I didn't really think about the fact that it does not come in in the burbs. I'm born and raised in the city. I live here now. I don't even have a car so I don't get out your way too often. If you don't have access to it, and you haven't heard it, then just why not let it be without trying to paint a distorted picture. Thats like me assuming your blustering me with your referneces to Buddy Guys b/c I associate it with the "come in from the suburbs on the weekend tourist trap part of town."

Also, please explain why a radio station has to be "commercial" in order to have quality programming. I think that the most commercially successful stations right now are the ones owned by Evergreen or Clearchannel. I associate these with a lack of programming creativity which caters to the safe and middle of the road.

LOL. You call that liberal?

Heres a Google search on Loyola:

Loyola University Chicago

Loyola University Chicago is a Jesuit Catholic university.

Show me a liberal Jesus school & Ill be glad to show you my ***.

A radio station doesnt have to be commercial to be progressive. But it does help to be independent. Which XRT no longer is. And WLUW never was. Really now, how progressive do think a Catholic schools radio station is going to be? Im glad youre diggin it. But Ill get my progressive exposure elsewhere thank you.

I didnt say that I didnt have access to the station. You mentioned the station. Im always open to new things so (especially if this is the new XRT so to speak) I tried it out & found that I couldnt get it in the car. At home, even with a dual stacked array of large exterior antenna & one of the best tuners ever made (the same that WFMT uses to monitor their own signal & receive their own broadcast signal in Frankfort, IL. for worldwide satellite distribution), I still had to manually fine tune WLUW in. Its signal was mediocre at best. And, it was a talk show. Thats when I went to their web site to find out more about their programming, because this was certainly not what you had described.

Im also fascinated that you think South Wabash Avenue behind the Hilton Hotel & the EL tracks is the tourist trap part of town. Most folks from the burbs are afraid to show their white faces there. Fact of the matter is, anybody whos anybody in the music biz (nationally or internationally) can be found stopping by Buddy Guys when they are in town for their own gig.

If you like indie rock, LUW should be your station in Chicago. yeah right, IF you live on the north side within 5-10 miles of the Rogers Park area (half of that radius coverage is in Lake Michigan).

I'm born and raised in the city. Just so you know where Im coming from, I too was born in Chicago. North side. I grew up in Chicago, & what was to become the burbs.

Well what can I say Artto. Youre quite an ***. Are you getting snippy with me b/c I like a radio station?

Youve got a problem with Jesus and that just fine (I cant even believe I typed that sentence). Myself, I'm not a religous guy either. Won't stop me from listening to Loyola radio, though. I think you need to take a time out and realize that your making content assumptions based on the religous affiliation of the school.

Liberal station? Yep, I think so anyway. Read the WHOLE lineup. Shows devoted to gay, lesbian, and labor issues. Some of the most progressive music in the city? Yeah, that to. It also has the shows you initially pointed out. If that forms the basis for your conclusions about the station in its entirety including its ideolgical foundations, I guess I cannot say anything to change your mind. Maybe it would help this discussion if you provided a definition of Liberal or even progressive. I conceed that if your definition includes a categorical exclusion such as "radio stations owned by religous institutions are neither liberal nor progressive" than, in your mind, you are absolutely correct about luw.

Your a legend in your own mind - six blocks south of the loop is not that edgy. The green mill back in the day, however, before they moved a starbucks across the street (and a borders on the way) now THAT was a place most sensible people thought twice about before parking the car.
