MichaelShaffer
My receiver was supposed to be here friday. They said I wasn't there when they came. I figured ok, maybe they didn't have enough time to deliver it. So I waited the whole weekend and today when I try to track it it says Recipient location security delay. Delivery will be reattempted. I called Fedex and even they don't know what that means. So they're going to research it and call me in 12 to 24 hours. http://www.fedex.com/cgi-bin/tracking?action=track&language=english&cntry_code=us&initial=x&mps=y&tracknumbers=105144130053117

cluless
Speakers shipped by United Parcel Smashers - a good thing? Well, I hope everything arrives safe and sound. Isn't waiting fun?
Frzninvt
You must be talking about Fedex Ground, formally Roadway Package Service (RPS) they cannot seem to get anything right. I have had alot of trouble with Fedex Ground, damaged items, wrong zip codes inputed, package routed to different states ,etc. I have had maybe a couple of acceptable deliveries from them, but I think I will take my chances with the UPS gorillas instead. We really need a shipping service that cares about the customer and packages.
fini
What shipper gets the nod, then? I was going to use FedEx Ground in shipping a single Heresy to Tom, in Florida (I think...) from California (fairly certain of this), but I've had problems with them, too. They completely broke the driver off the horn in a KSP-C6. Not surprising, really, when you look at the back-and-forth journey it took to go from Anaheim (Southern CA) to Rohnert Park (Northern CA): Almost comical, except they still haven't resolved the insurance deal. So, should it go UPS? Parcel Post? fini
Frzninvt
I find if a package is packed securely according to UPS's standards I have not trouble. Of the over 200 transactions I have conducting on eBay and shipped UPS I have not had a single problem. I always, always overpack when I can. The UPS online tracking system seems to be more effective than Fedex's Ground Service. The only issues I have had is when people sending stuff to me could not pack anything to save their life even when asked. Those pack and ship places are even worse and charge big $$ for a real crap job. I'd say pack it well and it will arrive well, I would go UPS, they may be brutal sometimes but they don't misroute packages that often or forget where your house is like Fedex Ground. Ray Garrison
MichaelShaffer, The security delay (courier code 16) occurs when a courier is trying to deliver a package to a facility that has one of those scanners at the entryway, like a federal building or a post office or some such thing. The courier shows up, and is informed that each and every package going to that location must be individually passed through the scanner, and this must be done by one of the employees *working at the facility*, not by the courier. The courier can either sit there and wait for an indeterminate period of time until the guard gets off their a** and runs the boxes through the scanner, or the courier can punch in a code that says "I got delayed waiting for security clearence", and put the box(es) back on the van and go to the next call. If the courier thinks there's going to be more than a couple minutes delay waiting for someone to run the boxes through, they will be forced to take the boxes back and move on, or they will miss all downstream delivery committments. Fini, for express shipments, you can't beat FedEx. For ground shipments, FedEx uses a variety of independent subcontractors, so it's kind of hit or miss. I'd use UPS or one of the common carriers for large ground shipments.
fini
Doing a quick estimate/comparison (not having Tom's zip code), FedEx Ground is $32, UPS Store is $48, and USPS Parcel Post is $42. USPS is slightly more convenient, but are they a bad choice? Who are "common carriers?" fini
Frzninvt
While the USPS Parcel Post may take a bit longer to get there, in my experiences the USPS seems to handle packages alot more gently than the other carriers. The drawback is no means of tracking at all, delivery confirmation is a joke. If it get lost/misplaced you have to wait 30 days to file a claim. Fini, the UPS Store charges an additional 10% to the actual charge, you don't have an actual UPS facility nearby that you could take it to instead? If not the USPS may be the way to go. fini
Thanks, Ray! I will soon begin calling each of those firms to get estimates. Common (carrier) denominators. I will post my findings, and get opinions from the posters here. Tom should have his speaker by 2005. Charles, Thanks for the tip! So, with Parcel Post there is NO tracking available? Did you guys check out the FedEx link I posted above? Now THERE'S some tracking! fini
Ray Garrison
Fini, Yes, FedEx provides wonderful tracking data. My firm is a logistics consulting firm that helps suppliers of perishable food products get their products delivered on time and in spec. Part of what I've built is a system my staff here at our location uses to track packages while they're en route. Here is a sample of what that page looks like (obviously, this image is static, and I had to blank out the customer data). As far as I'm concerned, if you have to ship something overnight, and it's important, FedEx is by far the best choice. Ray
Q-Man
For what it's worth, I never had a problem with FedEx. I must have received and shipped about 60 packages.
MichaelShaffer
Ok, it finally came today after I called and they traced the package. They called the driver and I guess he found the package or something. Those Fedex trucks are big, he couldn't even pull in my driveway. I guess I can see how it would get lost.. prodj101
I hate fed ex. I ship UPS over them anyday. I've never had a prob with any damage to any of my equipment (and I order a ton of stuff online, i.e. RSW-15, 2 pairs of speakers, center channel, and about 8 components). the RF-5's I had shipped freight though. those were just to important to me to risk getting damaged. cluless
ray, I don't know if you looked at fini's link for the fed ex tracking stuff or not. Who really cares how well they track anything if they want to play "lets bounce your stuff back and forth, back and forth, back and forth"...Yeah, so you can track the devastation....bouncy bouncy fun fun fun! NOT
fini
Yeah, clu, that's what I was gettin' at. Or, trying to. Amazing, isn't it? The tracking of the return to the shipper (to confirm damage) is almost as ping-pongy (new term...how's it fit?). fini
towelie
It doesnt matter which company you ship with (FedEx, UPS, USPS, or DHL). They all have flaws. Bubba "six pack" doesnt care about your shipment and will fling it on a conveyer belt with out a seconds notice. Pick any company you want for delivery. The only thing that gets it there on time or undamaged is....HOPE.
Ray Garrison
I'm starting to sound like a marketing rep for FedEx, and that's sure not my intension here... only point - I've shipped about 9,500 packages so far in 2003 using FedEx, and I've had less than 20 failures (package arrived the day after it was supposed to, or was damaged in transit.) *ANY* express shipping environment is hard on packages. They have to be properly engineered and packaged to stand up to, uh, firm handling they will experience. Of all the companies we worked with during the development of our product (expedited overnight shipping of perishable food products direct to the buyer), FedEx was hands down and far and away the best. Okay, I'll be quiet now.
fini
Again, Ray, you're talking FedEx Express, as opposed to Ground, right? fini
