How bad can sound get???

I am currently listening to an MP3 CD disk (128 kb/s uniformly recorded = days of dross) playing on my portable computer connected via the headphone ouput through a cable that converts the din plug to 2 RCA's into this:

Which I bought in a moment of madness through ebay. It has a bass distort (er boost) button which sadly has to be on to get any bass AT ALL!!!

At least the treble rolls off so fast it wont wake anyone.

Imaging - er, no

Soundstage - you jest surely.

Bass - yup - fully implemented distortion.

Mids - maybe there are no mids on these recordings?http://www.empiredirect.co.uk/productimages/JVC/RVDP200.jpg

Highs - rolled off.

Volume - quiet is best (very quiet - actually off)

Still - it looks kinda cool, although a bit self conciously retro - what was I thinking? Especially as I already have the older version of this

Which really does rock albeit in a very military green, but that is at home in the baby's room for the "Varkula"!

That probably doesn't sound as bad as my current setup. Since my Klipsch speakers have failed and had to be shipped back to the dealer, I have been extracting cd audio into mp3 and transfering it to my hard drive, where I convert it into Nokia ring tones and download it to my cellphone via usb.

Surprisingly, my Nokia cell phone has great imaging, and crystal clear highs, though the bass is a little lacking.
