Sheltie Dave's Pornographic Shorthorn

Dave tagged it. The game warden (who looked suspiciously like 'Boss Hogg' from Dukes of Hazzard) took one look, spit some tobacco juice on the ground and said:

'You damn yankees don't know the first thing about huntin. Ya'll suppose to take the insides out, not the outsides off.'

It looks much worse than it really is...but Bill, the original owner, claims it came that way from the factory.

Shorty was out of the house for a week on a strange sojourn. We had two insurance bills due for payment, and I was still waiting for two not insubstantial consulting payments to arrive in the mail(side note- there is no slower check in the mail than contract employment payments!) I ended up talking to an acquaintance friend(his wife is one of my best friends from college,) and I sold him a decrepit Mac C22 preamp and Shorty with the understanding that I would buy the two items back as soon as funds arrived. This was on a Friday.

The one payment arrived Saturday, so I went to the bank on Monday, cashed the check, and pocketed the balance due Tom. Called him up, verified he would be home for lunch, and headed over with a couple grinders to eat. When I got there, Tom trotted the dog and pony show out. He needed new tires, his sales commissions were down, and he really needed money - so I could pay him $500 to get Shorty back. Hmmm, double what I "charged" him three days prior. And the C22? Already sold.

Called my actual friend(his wife) up, and asked her what the scoop was. Turns out he had sold the C22 to a rabid and not rich Mac afficianado for more than double what I "charged" him, and the guy also had a down payment on Shorty of $400. Talked to Tom, explained that I could do grevious bodily harm if sufficiently motivated, and kindly asked him to get things straightened out and Shorty delivered to my house no later than that evening. I left him $250, left the house with a prayer that Tom and friend where not in as serious marital trouble as I now figured they were.

The wife called me later in the afternoon - Tom and Shorty were gone - to the puchaser's house. Another two hours, passed, and I get a call from the buyer, rather irate that he overpayed for both the C22, Shorty and that neither was in good working order as detailed by Tom. Got a hold of friend, and we headed over to the guy's house to buy everything back and settle matters.

It turned out the guy wanted the C22 and was willing to pay well above what he needed to for the preamp - he just did not want to deal with the zzzhole Tom. I gave him all four Mullard 12ax7s I have come across to smooth the waters(dam), we bought Shorty back, and he kept the C22 for rebuilding. My friend split the lessened profit from the C22 sale, and we parted on great terms, with Shorty in the back of the party Volvo for the third time since I've known her. The woofer has been rebuilt(thanks to CaptnBob's referral) and she is singing well as I type.

I'll be posting more photos as soon as Colleen shows me how to move the jpegs we have, and I'm looking forward to having her significant other arrive from New Orleans by the end of the month, hopefully.

And Mike, I hope your caps are in, so you don't have as much time to spend tagging stuff that is not yours.9.gif That is pretty choice!

Ol' shorty has some stories behind it.

At least you didn't have to bludgeon Tom with a blunt object.

Sorry Dave, I won't tag your speakers anymore. But I seen that nice flat black spray paint all over the motorboard and couldn't resist.

The caps have been in, I've have about 20 hours on the amp since intial fire-up last Friday.

Dave,

Is that the blown 15WK you wanted to replace? Can you tell how close it sounds to the original? Looks/sounds like a good outcome!

Larry, Bob got me hooked up with a great speaker reconer here in St. Louis. His name is Lloyd, and he works at Spectra Audio up in north county. It cost $60(with newbie discount)and Shorty sounds great. I am going to measure and spec out all the dimensions so the people interested in replicating an authentic Klipsch shorthorn can build their own!

Larry has two original shorthorn woofers that someone on the forum needs.(HINT)

AVman, just let me know when and how, and if you need any more bakeesh. ForwardAir is no problem; I don't mind a trip to the airport to pick him up if it is convenient for you.

Again, Mike, kudos on your graffitti> I love bright colors, so it is already installed as my screensaver2.gif

The re-cone is very similar to what was there originally - except the cone is "curvilinear" instead of flat sided, the surround is phenolic instead of paper, - and of course, there's that non-period EV dust cap. I've heard these are all ways the 15-wk came over its production life. It actually sounds a little better than the original, but that could just be me...

Think I could get my Shorthorns painted like that?
