Klipsch-friendly receiver advice neeeeded from EVERYBODY.

I just bought a set of Klipsch speakers: KSB3.1 front pair, KSB center and quintet rear pair. I am now shopping for a receiver to go with them. I will be using the system 70% for rock music and 30% for movies(which is why I settled on quintet as rears). As you can see, it's meant to be an entry level system, so the budget for a receiver is around $300. After the first round reading in audioreview.com I narrow it down to:

Marantz SR-4000, Denon 1601 and Onkyo 494.

Denon is slightly favored in this forum.

Onkyo has Dolby Pro Logic II which seems useful.

Marantz doesn't even have DTS but I got the impression it sounds warmer and suits for Klipsch's which are on the bright side.

Everybody's opinion needed for the final decision!!!

Thanks,

I tried these budget receivers in my home:

Onkyo, Kenwood, JVC, Sony and Technics. All with similar features including DTS and Dolby. To me the only one that worked well with my Klipsch speakers was the Technics SA 1040. It has a smooth warm sound (the others sounded harsh to me)with lots of power and features. It does lack digital inputs and Technics receivers run warm. Give the Technics along with the others a listen in your home and trust your ears.

sologemini, do the right thing and buy a good used Harman Kardon. I have the HK AVR 65...It has a remote control that lights up for one, which I have found to be very useful. Coax and optical digital inputs of course. But what makes these receivers better than the other's mentioned is the high current they put out. Amp output on my model is 35 amps. Compare this to others at 15 or 20.

Amp output is very inportant in a receiver. Think of wattage and amp output flowing like a river. Wattage is how fast the river run's, amp output is how deep the river is.

A receiver that has 75w per channel & has a current capability of 35 amps is MUCH better than a receiver that has 125w per channel and has a low current output below 15 amps.

I have tried them all, HK sounds better! you can find the AVR 65 on ebay from time to time for under $300. Actually any HK digital receiver would be a compliment to your HT. And they sound good with Klipsch...

my vote's for marantz like the sr7000(or maybe lower) to sr-18ex. very full, rich, tube-like high current units that somewhat tame those horns' brightness. detail & very silent between passages. check 'em out w/ klipsch.

marantz went off track w/ superscope for awhile but took the co. back & seem to be with it now.

I have the Technics SA-DX1050 (newer version of the SA-DX1040 that mpgwagon has).

I could have spent more money and got an Onkyo, but I like the value and sound this receiver has. Very good value for the $$$

That's only if you have the legend series. My C-7 does sound too bright with the HK but every other Klipsch speaker ive tried sounds great. Hit's bass with authority and has very strong dynamic's. Sure the Marantz would be better but arent you looking for something under $300?

Whatever you get just make sure it's a high current amp.

Most of my experiance is with Denon/Yamaha. Avman's unit will do well, don't know about the comprable Denon, but I will say that I feel Denon has always sounded a little warmer than Yamaha for music. Just a rough generalization & MHO.

Auditioning this stuff, making a decision, taking it home, hooking it up, tweeking,....this is the hobby!cwm35.gif Check out your local shops & find one you can live with. Get to know the sales staff, pick one out & shoot straight with him/her cwm1.gif .

Just be careful, this stuff gets in your blood faster then you thinkcwm38.gif
