Marvel
AF, The 6L6 has 30 watts of plate dissipation. An EL34 is only rated for 25 watts. I have been told that the 6L6 can have a more recessed midrange, but Mark has pointed out that the rest of the circuit is the rest of the story. Timmikid
Nice to reread an older interesting thread! Thanks for bringing it up again and adding to it.
3dzapper
"The Mono 10 just wasn't popular enough to make them profitable to >> carry " That's interesting Dee though sad. As you know I found the sound of the Mono 10 to blow the 3.5 out of the water. Well that may be extreme but, clearly better with Khorns and the same tubes. The additional 5 Dbs of class A power and the 3 more Dbs of AB light them up IMO. I think I'll move my 99C out to the garage and power one of my Belles as I work on refinishing the other to hear "that" 6L6 sound. Daddy Dee
Yeh, I think that is kind of sad, too. The 2A3 PP amp has a huge cool factor, IMO. Part of that is because Mr. Paul Klipsch used amps of this topology for many years. If I was doing a 2A3 purchase again, the Mono 10's would be my choice over the WPA 3.5's. Geo Wright's new 6L6 amp, (or EL34 if preferred) looks like an attractive offering. I've been listening to one of those antique Baldwin 6L6 amps (out of an old church organ) and it is quite impressive.
