In no way am I trying to detract, it can be fun and enlightening to try different techniques for next to free. While egg cartons do not absorb sound in a wide bandwith, they will give a certain amount of diffusion. Musicians friend has the Auralex studiofoam kit for $99.99 ( 32 square feet of foam ), and are offering free shipping for a limited time on $99 minimun orders ( normally $ 199.99 minimum order ). I think that light diffusion will make the room much warmer. Right now the gray of cardboard egg cartons is a little " military" .
