mcp
I'm trying to get this Dual 1229 up and running. The cartridge is a Shure M-75 Type D, which was made especially for this unit, I think. I just received a new stylus for it (Shure 760-D6). The stylus package recommends a tracking force of 3-5 gms and I was told by a dealer that the M-75 D's tracking force should be 3.5 gms. The Dual only goes up to 3. How can this be? Anybody out there w/ a chart for discontinued cartridges?
BillH2121
The Shure website contains a list and specifications of discontinued carts.
mcp
Unfortunately, not this one (as far as I can see)...
dragonfyr
Just a question... If it was specifically for that TT, why would it have a recommended tracking force of 3-5 grams!!!! on a TT with a maximum setting of 3grams!? Just a suggestion, check with the needle doctor http://www.needledoctor.com/ that cartridge with that mass is going to eat records alive! Typical tracking forces for the Dual 12xx series were in the range of 1.5 -2.5g (and the higher mass was for the then top of the line Stanton cartridge with the brush, if I recall!) johnyholiday
also 1 gram of upforce ,has to be factored in for the brush ,on the stanton
dragonfyr
Which made the effective tracking force 1.5 g!
sputnik
I use a Shure v15 type III cart with a vn35mr stylus on my Dual 701 and I have it tracking at one gram. The recommended tracking range is 0.75 to 1.25 grams. I wonder if that dealer gave you a tracking force for a disco-rap type TT. As far as I know, the v15 type III was the usual mated cartridge to the early seventies top model Duals like the 701 and 1229 and there was a "DU" or "DM" extension following the model #. The v15 type III was discontinued some time ago. Last year, I bought one the the last vn35mr stylii that were available from Shure for an eventual replacement. There is a Swiss aftermarket version that's not too pricey - they show up on eBay now and then. Shure did have a current production substitute cart for the Duals but I can't remember what it is. Call Shure directly, they were very helpful for me. Maybe they can even dig up something special for you from the back of some dusty drawer. That 1229 is worth the effort. Check out the comments on it at audioreview.com sometime: http://audioreview.com/cat/analog-sources/turntables/DUAL/PRD_124511_1597crx.aspx Good luck. Mark Hardy
http://www.cartridgedb.com/ Just select "Shure" from the Manufacturer pull-down and browse the results. Less (info) is more, in the case of this database!
