sunburnwilly
So , the 1/4" thicker cabinet is worth 50 Lbs. ?
Piranha
The cabinets are a two piece design now. But hell, what do I know? I have only seen and heard them once myself. As far as the extra 50lbs??? I'd ask the pros like Jim Hunter and Roy Delgado!
Daddy Dee
Seems like I remember something about MDF in the construction. Still, 175lbs sounds on the heavy side. I think the old ones were 110, no?
J.4knee
Old cabinets were 123 lbs but it is hard to imagine the weight jumped to 175 lbs just from using MDF to build the bass bin. I may be incorrect but I thought the dog house was still plywood and only the walls were MDF to reduce resonance in the walls ?!?!?!? 3dzapper
At 175# you won't have to worry about burgulars putting them in their sack like Bozo cubes.[] Think of it as sandbagged LaScalas. Rick
Bill H.
Here is the verbage from the Announcement "Virtually unchanged since those campaign days, Klipsch decided to cosmetically improve the La Scala by making it available in a variety of wood veneer finishes, including cherry, walnut and black ash. The La Scala II also has a grille to cover the mid and high frequency horns. The bass horn cabinet walls are now constructed of 1-inch thick MDF rather than ¾-inch plywood to offer more support, resulting in decreased resonance and cleaner bass response." colterphoto1
Not only what BIllH said, but now the top section is removeable, so you essentially have a double wall between them, whereas before there was a single 3/4 plywood between the bass bin and top section, now it's a 3/4 MDF base to the top hat and 1" MDF top to the bass bin. Thats a lot of MDF there folks. The 1/4" thickness increase is the entire outer skin of the bass bin, or 5 panels 4 ft2 each, that's 20 ft2 of added MDF, add to that that the entire thing is MDF instead of Plywood, AND add the riser base, not included before. Pretty easy for all that to add up to 50 pounds. Michael
