kenratboy
If you are into cars, you know that Volkswagan owns Bugatti and their first car (VW's ownership of Bugatti) was the 1000 HP Veyron. It has a 16 cylinder W16 engine (2 V8's attached horizontally) and it has FOUR turbos and AWD as well as a 7 speed tranny. Anway, the car will set you back a whopping $1,200,000. This seems like a lot of money until you consider how much it costs Bugatti to build... $9,000,000 How? It is a once-in-a-lifetime statement piece and technological experiement. Not audio related, but I though you might appreciate it.
Olorin
Does it cost $9,000,000 to build EACH of them, or did it cost $9,000,000 to build the FIRST one?
kenratboy
Yes, for each one - as in, it costs them $7,800,000 to sell each car (hence the limited production). The idea is they will make it back because their reputation is now at a god-like level and anything they make, people will buy at any price. The two stocks for the wipers and turn signal cost Bugatti about $6,000 EACH. They are made of machined aluminum and magnesium.
hooting_monkey
Yeah, they have fame, until the next company builds a more powerful and faster one.
kenratboy
Nah, they have some serious streed cred for a few years, no matter what. The McLaren F1 has been out for over 10 years and is still wildly popular and respected.
SteelerFan
Wonderful. I'm sure all the rap stars who can afford one will appreciate the $6,000 wipers and turn signals.[]
cmdridq
So for $1.2M do you get a fully loaded one or is it stripped down?
kenratboy
So for $1.2M do you get a fully loaded one or is it stripped down? For an extra $50,000, you can get the Bose system! Actually, these guys make it: http://www.burmester.de/
sunburnwilly
Who want's to be the first to change the plugs on that thing ? You know there's at least 32 . But heck , " If you could afford it , I guessin' you could afford the support staff required for it . " Jay Leno's probably got at least 1 . kenratboy
Yeah, even those 50-cent mail in rebates for the spark plugs would really start to add up! I wonder if you can get pads and rotors at Kragen...
sunburnwilly
The reason I mentioned the plugs is that truthfully , if you owned this thing , and attempted to drive it around town , instead of the way it's meant to be driven , you would be changing alot of them ... kenratboy
I know that used to be true (old Ferrari's and such), but with this thing, and other new stuff (new Ferrari's, Corvette, Viper, M5, etc.), who knows. 'Sorry officer, I need to take it up to 200 MPH once a week!'
Jay481985
I remember ferrari's are notorious for using motor oil. They use a special shell motor oil that cost 50 dollars a quart. And if you do not use it it voids all warantee. Also the fact that the engine usually has 8 quarts really adds up... I'll stick to my mobil 1 at 4 dollars a quart thank you. I have one honda 91 accord with 180000 miles on it. The engine is like new with mobil
Mighty Favog
Why would Bugatti take a loss on building it. I mean, it cost $9mil. to build and then sell it for $1.2 mil. ??
jzoz01
My guess would be that if it is indeed true, it's taking into account the development and design costs and averaging them out among all the cars built, they may make a profit building and selling the car, but take a loss on the project as a whole due to the cost to develop. But that is ok, because of the trickle down effect. The technology developed for this car will be implimented into their vw and audi lines. Mighty Favog
O.K., so I'm assuming that each car does not cost $9 mil. to build when it is selling for $1.2. The $9 mill is for the prototype and the developement.
kenratboy
No... This model is a statement piece and is not profitable. The prototype cost a whole hell of a lot more than $9,000,000 (they have been working on it for over FIVE years). The whole point is it will relaunch the brand and give new technology to other cars. Jay481985
look at it this way, the VW Phaeton was a testbed for the new Bentleys. The Bentleys use a modified chasis and enginer of the VW Phaeton. Though this year they are phasing the Phaeton out. Usually there are cars out there just to make statements and lose money. Heck GM loses 2000 per every car they sell. While Nissan makes 1400 profit. But there are cars like the Mercedes Benz SLK with the hardtop convertible that became a test model for the top of the line sl.
