customsteve01
The date is somewhere between 1948-1961, I think you would have to go to Klipsch to get the actual date. This is from the S/n Format sheet that Willy posted. 1946-1961 dates can only be found in log book (eng. Library) Steve
khorn51
Of the top of my head I would say they around 1960 give or take a year. Do the have the part Wood mid horn? M 75 would be mahogany. If you dont want them I have a freind looking for the older Khorns.
funkyhambone
yes sir thanks. i was aware of that date chart. i just thought that someone might know off the top of their head ballpark. the m75 finish is puzzling to me. i haven't seen them yet. i will tomorrow. my best guess is mohogany, but i really don't have a clue. does anyone know how these will compare to my 1972 khorns? will the quality be worse because of the age and components? funkyhambone
i haven't seen them yet. i will tomorrow. does the part wood mid make them sound better? worse? more valuable? less?
Jeff Matthews
I believe I have read a few posts saying the wood horns are better. Good luck! If these are in nice shape, or you get the right price and beautify them, it seems they'd be a piece of history and a nice talking point. I'd imagine they are comparable to your 72's. khorn51
I like the early drivers myself over later ones. I also find the early crossover are more stable than later ones. All of mine have test to spec and the date from 51 to 59. It's funny for me the older a good driver is the better they sound at least in my vintage speakers and guitar amps. For me the wood mid horn rules as well as the other drivers used. Klipsch used good stuff back in the day. If you decided you like the later driver better you can always sell the early driver and buy the later and with the profit left over buy some nice vinyl. I have a friend that really wants a pair of pre 60 khorns if anyone comes up with one or two let me know.
Tom Mobley
I have a pair of '60s, K-B-M7. IIRC, #1511 and #1517. M7 is a code for a very dark mahogany lacquer finish. Not sure what M75 is, that might also be M7S. Probably some minor variation on the theme. Mine are very dark with a extremely dark brown trim, so dark that a paint store had trouble matching it. Many of the edges that are normally veneered on hardwood Khorns are painted brown instead. Some of it is that dark brown painted over veneer, on some they skipped the edge veneer and just painted the edge of the lumber core plywood. The mahogany under that dark lacquer is the most gorgeous Honduran mahogany you could imagine. I've already refinished the top of one because the lacquer on the fronts is really crazed and peeling. I didn't go with the dark, I'm finishing them clear, no stain or tint in the finish. The grill cloth on these is not black but a very dark oxblood color. I was very fortunate to run across some at Antique Electronic Supply which is local to me. The cloth on the speakers is good, but I needed some to finish the matching mahogany Belle I built to go with them. Very lucky to find it, it is exact, the weave and all. I don't know if the wood horn sounds better or not, it sounds good though. I also have a pair of LS with K-400 and I like the Khorns better, seems like the mid-bass to upper mid-bass is just smoother somehow. I have an ALK trachorn sitting on top of one of them right now, original K-55-V screwed into it. I can't tell that it sounds any better or worse or even different. I can tell the ALK horn is better than a K-400 though.
