Three come immediately to mind, don't know if there are on DVD or not:

1. The first scary movies that comes to mind is "Silence of the Lambs" I suspect it will be on many people's lists for the inspired interpretation that Anthony Hopkins's brief appearances brings to the role. Great movies often have great villains and few are more sculpturally shaped than Hopkins villain. His Lechter is also combined with a demon of pure sadistic intent, in a plot twist that gives an otherwise fairly ordinary plot, two villains for the young FBI cadet to chase. It is on my list however, because of all the finely crafted characters in the script, no one does a better job with their part than the vastly under-rated Jody Foster. Watch how every single scary scene in the movie is not Anthony Hopkins, but fears actually registered by Foster's expressions.

2. "Seven" is so down right evil that many people do not like it. It slithers through the seven deadly sins of the Bible in such a macabre and repellant way, one easily forgets about the fine performances given by Morgan Freeman, Brad Pitt, Kevin Spacey and Gwyneth Paltrow. What is scary about this movie is the accuracy of this portrayal of evil.

3. "The Dentist" with Corbin Bersen is just plain horrible. Do not take a date to see this movie - you will be defeating the purpose. I often think that horror movies are not just about horror, they are often just horrible movies. This movie is from the director of the very good, but not particularly scary, "The Re-animator". It doesn't have the fantasy world dream of gore - it has your worst fears of a dentist visit in vivid color. It is a gory movie. Its pure realism and "cringe factor" really make this film scary.

A must buy is the Dario Argento directed limited edition numbered DVD box set of his landmark film Suspiria. One of the finest and most identifiable soundtracks of any movie EVER. Influenced John Carpenter's own music for Halloween. This movie/soundtrack(by the band Goblin) is one of my all-time faves.

Actually more of a TV series in the 80's...Rod Serlings..."Night Gallery" Smile.gif

But as a true fan, Nightmare on Elm Street and the orginal Jason13, both in "1" and not 78th episode.

OK...Jack Nichlsons "it's Johnny" in the Shining (frozen in the maze...ACE) and Linda Blairs head spin in the Exorcist. Actually, the original Jaws (head falls from bottom of boat scene with Richard Dreyfuss).

To add, as a previous post, MY FAV sifi movies ..JC's "The Thing"

Followed by the original "Alien" and Aliens". To add to the horror title, the ole Halloween series with Micheal Meyers....

man-i saw 'suspiria' when i was a kid-when the girl is on the second floor and a pair of glowing red eyes appear outside the window-the hair on my arms is standing up as i write this. REALLY cheap production, but a real spooker. the hellraiser series and phantasm series are creepy too! love the hemi challenger w/pistol-grip 4-speed. avman.
