It is a type of passive radiator that functions to make the "cabinet seem larger" for the woofer. Part of the appearance is stylistic and it is also aimed at eliminating diffraction. The height is by design also, since the dispersion of the tweeter is idiosyncratic in the vertical dimension. The sound is very "mellow". They are quite bass shy. The imaging can be good but they are quite sensitive to room placement and toe-in. They are not very efficient (we Klipsch owners do get spoiled ..... ) so they do not have a dynamic sound. These were my first pair of good speakers (when I started making some money). I have hung on to them for a number of years, but I should get rid of them.
