thebes
Well I was in New York on this fateful day 5 years ago watching the towers fall down. I refuse to get maudlin. I'll say a prayer, and hope the crumb bums running the country are at least half as prepared as they say they are, and put on some tunes. Format's simple: Name of artist or group, name of album, type of music as best you can (rock, blues etc.), and recording format (cd, lp etc.) Taj Mahal, "The Best of Taj Mahal" , roots blues,cd. Can't find a sweeter voice or a more gentle peronality to cheer one up. I call his music roots blues, because it's a combination of folk and delta blues and in spirit seems to harken back to other times and places. I've seen him live twice and boy does he light up the stage with his personality. I have a few of his cd's lying around but for those not familiar with him, or his music this is really not a bad way to start. Remember the Blues Brothers? Check out his version of "She Caught the Katy and Left Me a Rule to Ride" and don't miss out on "Cake Walk Into Town". Sadly the recording quality is only so-so, but it's still worth a listen. So what do you have to share this week?

thebes
Almost forgot. Wheelman, having won a Klipsch t-shirt last year has generously given up his claim to last month's prize. I'll redo the drawing tomorrow and let you folks know. Thanks, Wheelman, a very nice gesture.

oldbuckster
Well all this 911 talk makes me think back to much simplier time of life, back to the late 60's and early 70's with this choice, seems kinda fitting to me, so here we go; THE WORST OF JEFFERSON AIRPLANE ............. remastered CD .......... The original Protest group, this group of talented musicians always spoke their minds, no secrets here about their opinions, or feelings. This is one of the most unique groups of it's time, and some of their best work is included in this disc. Right off the top they were graced with Jorma Kaukonen, on Guitar, and his old buddie Jack Cassidy on Bass, what a duo those guys were, Hot Tuna anyone, laying it down for the triple vocal's of Paul Kantner, Marty Balin, and oh yes, Grace Slick. Gracie the Queen of Acid Rock, great voice, blended real well with Marty, and Paul. Grace added that Trippy sound to the vocals, and this Band could Rock, check this play list; 1. It's No Secret 2. Blues from an Airplane 3. Somebody to Love 4. Today 5. White Rabbit 6.Embryonic Journey 7. Martha 8.the ballad of you& me& pooneil 9. Crown of Creation 10. Chusbingura 11. Lather 12.Plastic Fantasic Lover 13. Good Sheppard 14. We Can Live Together 15. Volunteers 15 Great songs, a taste of the Airplane, a historical marker, if you will, to a much different times, rock was ready to explode on the music scene, simple songs about cars and girls had come to pass, it's a new Dawn people was the battle cry. If your into the History of Rock, get this album, throw it on, kick back and go for a ride on the Airplane...............the Remastering of this is Great......"UP AGAINST THE WALL, MOTHERF........R." rplace
<?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" />Thebes, you got me instantly thinking of this with your sweet voice comment. This is an album every person on the planet should own.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /> Helen Merrill's debut LP. Some times referred to as Helen Merrill 1954 or Helen Merrill with Clifford Brown. Or simply Helen Merrill. Jazz Vocals with a great backing band. If you don't get chills down your spine when you listen to "Don't Explain" then you don't have a pulse. If I had this LP when I was going through puberty I would not have needed "Pictures of Lily" if you get my drift. I apologize to The Who for that lame joke. Are you still reading this...what is wrong with you...get this LP now!
theryugobuddy
An incredibly obscure pop masterpiece--the band made this and broke up -- too bad The Day I Fell Down -- "Sweet to be Strange"
grog
I picked this jewel last week at the super market. The Last Waltz - The Band - DVD Special Edition - 1978 (2002) - MGM Home Entertainment (UA) Track Listing: Don't Do It - The Band Theme from the Last Waltz - The Band Up on Cripple Creek - The Band The Shape I'm In - The Band Who Do You Love - Ronnie Hawkins/The Band It Makes No Difference - The Band Such a Night- Dr John (Mac Rebennec)/The Band Helpless - Neil Young/The Band Stagefright - The Band The Weight - The Band/The Staples The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down - The Band Dry Your Eyes - Neil Diamond/The Band Coyote - Joni Mitchell/The Band Mystery Train - Paul Butterfield/The Band Mannish Boy - Muddy Waters/The Band Further on up the Road - Eric Clapton/The Band Sip the Wine - Rick Danko Evangeline - The Band w/Emmylou Harris Genetic Method - Garth Hudson Ophelia - The Band Caravan - Van Morrison/The Band Forever Young - Bob Dylan/The Band Baby Let Me Follow You Down - Bob Dylan/The Band I Shall Be Released - Everybody w/Ringo Starr & Ron Wood Theme from Last Waltz - The Band Great review which says it all. "THIS FILM SHOULD BE PLAYED LOUD!" http://www.thedigitalbits.com/reviews2/lastwaltz.html Greg's picks: Up on Cripple Creek - The Band ( The band at their best! ) Helpless - Neil Young/The Band ( Neil Young as I like to here him. ) This is a must have DVD. One of the best looking and sounding DVD's I own! The disc by MGM, presented in anamorphic widescreen detail, is beautifully and lovingly reworked to give us this enduring document. The colors are vibrantly displayed and the detail is perfect. I'm not surprised either, given the fact that Martin Scorsese was involved. This is concert footage shot in 1976 and yet you have to be impressed with the picture quality. The audio is equally spectacular. Mixed in Dolby Digital 5.1, as well as the requisite 2.0, the channels are all in good use. The 5.1 rear channels are very active and provide an immersive feeling that only serves to enhance the absorption of the film. Remember, 1976!
