What would be an ideal sub

Jojo Dancer

Recommended Posts

I've just bought the RB-51, RC-52, 2 RS-42. I am looking to do a 5.1 set up, so i need a subwoofer. I would like a 10" sub. I am a poor college student who has saved up for the speakers and the receiver (Yamaha 5950) so I would like to spend something in the price range from around $300.00 to $350.00. I hear the JBL sub 10 is nice. I watch alot of movies though not a lot are high action. I'd like a sub that sounds clean. Which sub would you reccomend?

If you could get the sub-12 for $200.00, i would get that out of the four you listed. At those priced you listed, even used, all are great deals, but the sub-12 will give you the best bang for your buck. Good luck and let us know what you end up getting and how you like it....

Sub 12 seems like the bargain of the bunch...the JoJo Dancer...your LFE (Life/Low Frequency...) was a movie with Richard Prior...I thought is was funny...I have an Outlaw LFM-1 (Hsu Assisteed Design) with my Heresys (or Quartets) and it works well together...

Reading the title of the thread alone, the ideal sub is the JL Audio Fathom f113. [:P] All others are boomboxes, with more or less sonic coloration. Damn, am I irritating or what?

The cheapo JBL subs are line if you like to have a $29.95 woofer installed with a peak to peak to match a good midrange.

Klipsch SUb12 all the way, stick a fork in the cheapo JBL compost filler.

EAR,

I trust your judgement so I hope I don't get burned. Partly based on your recommentation I bought an f113 last Saturday instead of a Dr. HSU. It cost more, but what the heck. I can't play it yet because I do not have a line level feed from my stereo amp. Not to worry, I'm not crazy (not too crazy, anyhow). I have an eight channel A/V controller on order with a line level LFE.

This is the first time I have ever bought equipment, taken it home, and not been able to use it. How strange. Well at least it looks beautiful. High gloss piano black. It requires auto polish to keep it shining and I have lots of that. Now if only I could hear it play. If not, it's still a nice end table.

......................................see EAR, some of us are listening to you. YOU BETTER BE RIGHT !!!

I'm sure you will be happy.

Now...that having been said, you've got to drop this "Dr. Hsu" nonsense. Doctor Seuss, maybe.

You don't drive Dr. Porsche do you? (Maybe I shouldn't ask!)

Ear, is now a good time to tell him that you were just funnin' about the JL? [:P][;)][6]

Enjoy your sub!!!!!!! [:D][;)]

Dr. mas,

I work at Johns Hopkins. Isn't everybody a Doctor? Dr. HSU; Dr. Klipsch; Dr. Bose; Doctor Doctor.....oh wait that's a song.

Dr Hsu,wow he has a doctorate! WOW My father has one too, many many people have the title of DR so ....?Mr Hsu designs subs that perform well above the price range(as most under 1K are pure boom boxes)SVS and HSU makes good products,JL Audio makes BETTER products(they better,as they cost 2-3 times more).

You cannot hear the sub?! You are using what gear? Sesame Steer LP player? Rat Shack AM Flavoradio? Any quality preamp or pre/pro or even receiver will have SUB OUTS or a second pair of VARIABLE LINE OUTs.

The JL Audio is not a miracle product either,it is simply one of the most capable woofers mated to a very high power amp with ARO optimisation.Thing is it happens to best 99% of the subs on the market and so many that cost 5 grand and ...more,way more.

Doctor...heal my sub addiction ...no doctor can. [:'(]

Doctor Doctor, give me the news............................who sang that song? Robert Palmer perhaps?

I guess the song was written for the f113........I've got a bad case of loving you !!!!

The JL f113 is a whole class above the RSW(even the RSW15) ,nothing besides mid-bass punch the RSW's are known for is even close.

As a true subwoofer the JL Audio will dig to below 16hz with real power in room,in fact it bests large SVS subs and matches ported SVS using dual drivers. In boxes several times larger...and ported! The quality of the bass beats anything SVS offers(even the Ultra)and HSU subs(their best unit).

Now comes real competition from the Velo DD18,this one is close in SQ but loses by a full 6dB below 20Hz! All this while costing more!!

Only real competition would come from Wilson Audio WatchDog and Thiel's SmartSubs(the two large units). And here they cost several times more.

All the pro reviews so far simply point wat I am saying since purchasing the first f113. It is a bargain in the high end sub market, yes even at $3200.

Give me a DD18 for $2500(half the retail) and the f113 for $3200 and I take the f113 and gladly pay. This should tell you alot about the respect JL has earned in a few short moths.

The JL f113 does list at $3,200 but if you are serious about buying a JL Audio product let me know and I can get you a decent discount from an authorized JL dealer. A good price can make the difference between buying or not buying their products since they do cost a lot but appear to be worth the price.

EAR, unless you have determined your frequency numbers by measurements, I think you are wrong on the frequency response for the f113.

The engineers at JL say that the frequency response is 19 - 200 hz. No big deal. We are all wrong at times.

.......and BTW EAR I have McIntosh equipment and eventhough my stereo amp. doesn't have a line level output that doesn't cause me to lose any respect for McIntosh.

Sorry I am not wrong here, the f113 is capable at 16Hz. JL Audio are very conservative in the specs,a bit too much perhaps. I have THREE JL Audio subs so I think I know. OK

I have TrueRTA and as you may know I can generate tones, and compare how they are being reproduced(measure levels too). The f113 is a sub that can be rated with confidence down to..16Hz.

EAR, I apologize for suggesting that you were wrong on the frequency number. My info. was directly from JL, so you can see why I thought you were wrong. Apparently they do provide conservative specs. They list a 3" excursion for the speaker, when I discussed this with their engineers they told me that actually the excursion is more like 4".

As you know I have not been able to listen to my f 113 yet (line level deprived at the moment), so I am really excited about the 4" excursion and the 16HZ. I was a little confused when Dr. HSU listed the VTF-3 HO Turbo as extending down to 16hz while JL listed 19hz for the f 113.

I believe you. I can't wait for my new A/V controller with the line level feed so that I can power up the f 113. (gee.....f 113...........sounds like a jet aircraft)

BTW, how are you moving the JLs around in your room. I haven't listened yet but I am moving the unit around the room. Go figure. It takes me and my wife on our knees pushing it with all the muscle we have to just barely move it. They didn't add concrete for balast did they?

JL subs are nowhere near being ideal. They might sound good, but offering them up as the epitomy of low frequency reproduction is a bit obnoxious.

I can even think of a few alternatives in the same price range that should yield equal if not better performance - not to mention all the DIY designs available. But alas, price point shouldn't even be a factor concerning the absolute best in sound quality and there are plenty of more capable systems out there.

I'm sure the new JL subs are nice, but let's keep some perspective here...

So Ear...when you gonna start posting some measurements? What microphone are you using? [Y]
