Guy Landau
MV-50 is a nice amplifier. At least as good as any of the above. Very sensitive to the type of 6cg7 tube used as phase splitter. I don't know which type you're using but RCA Cleartop 6cg7/6fq7 will do wonders to the sound. GE 6cg7s sound very lean and dry in this amp. I'd experiment with tube rolling before even thinking of buying another amplifier.
lorcoll
Thanks Guy, so you think I'll have no improved sound if I change with any of this vintage amps? My tubes are GE (the small ones) and Electro Harmonix 6CA7 (fat bottle) for the EL34: the bass is beautiful, but the highs aren't like the SET amps (300B or 2A3). Guy Landau
I don't think that any vintage integrated amp will be an improvement over your MV-50. I'll definitely replace the GE 6cg7 with a RCA Cleartop or Black plate. I don't really know the EH 6CA7 but the JJ/Tesla EL-34 sound pretty nice to my ears. lorcoll
If I buy a 120volts amp I need an inverter for 230volts so, if I buy a Leak Stereo 20, I don't need that other component. From your answers I think that the Leak ins't inferior to Scott or Eico and I can easily find it in Europe (less shipping costs and customs). Is this a definitive good choice? Guy Landau
It definitely not inferior. I might be able to help you find a 230 Volt, Stereo 20 in nice condition.
NOSValves
The Leak would never be considered inferior to a Scott or Fisher. But with all things vintage condition both electrical and cosmetic is the key. Craig
lorcoll
Thanks Guy, Craig and to all. Now I am officially in search of a Leak Stereo 20 in good condition (some are in Ebay.uk).
lorcoll
Eureka!!! I have today bought the Leak Stereo 20 on Ebay.it for 500 euros. The EL84 are Siemens and some caps are new. Here is a pick of the inside. Has it done a good job? Have I to change the caps or resistors? http://img441.imageshack.us/my.php?image=d91bxr6.jpg I hope it can sounds good with the Corns. Lorenzo. bluesboy
Last year I bought a Fisher X-100 all original. I replaced the output tubes with nos Sylvnia 7189s and put in some new Ei 12ax7s from Yugoslavia and didn't touch anything else. I've considered sending it to Craig to have him go over it but it sounds great just the way it is. So good in fact that my vintage McIntosh ss gear is now up for sale. Guest " "
lorcoll "If I buy a 120volts amp I need an inverter for 230volts so" Not if the unit has 2 primary windings in the transformer. Wired in parallel will allow it to work where 110/120 is available. Wired in series will allow it to work where 220/230 is available.
