71 Cornwalls all original

I was given the Family Cornwalls a couple of years ago. My father bought them the year I was born. I've grown up with them. They are in mint condition considering thier age. The grills could be replaced and the bezel/trim around the front that the grills fit into. Other than that I know of nothing wrong with them. Still ahve the tags on the back. My question is should I do any restoration to the speakers in terms of electronics inside. I have played them sparingly, but have been thinking about buying a really nice amp and putting some power through them to play the drums alongside of. Event though I can't see any breakdown with the speakers is there something I should be checking at thier age prior to running them pretty hard? They have never been exposed to the outdorr elements or drastics changes in temps/ moisture etc... Can speakers actually last that long?

Any info would be appreciated. I've seen writeups about changing things inside that would bring new life into the speakers. Just not real sure about doing that.

Welcome to the Forum. Man are you lucky! Took me 56 years to get my hands on a pair.

Good thing about Klipsch is that the surrounds on the drivers (the speakers thingies) don't rot. Inside them you should probably just change out the capacitors. Nothing else is required. Over time the caps dry out and start to drift a bit. Bob Crites (BEC) on this Forum sells new caps. You can buy them and install them yourself if you are at all handy, or send the crossovers to him and for an additional charge he will do the work.

In terms of driving them they will handle an insane amount of power but don't really need it. If you like , you could push them until they start to distort/break up (that's called clipping) and then back them down a notch. Like any speaker you can blow them, especially with solid state stuff (as opposed to vacuum tubes) but there's no reason to wreck your hearing by driving them to the max because usually your ears will give out and start bleeding before the speakers do.

They will sound better with better gear so tell us what you are currently using them with. Some modest improvements and they may knock your socks off. Age of the corns would also be useful.

Oh yeah will they last that long? There's a good chance your grandchildren will be using them.

Uh, Thebes...the subject line says they are from 71. Very nice.

Welcome to the forums!

Duh! Probably time for a recap.

  • 1 month later...

Sorry it's taken me so long to respond been a hectic holiday season.

I have since found out that they are 77s (would this make them cornwall 2's?) or thats what I'm assuming with a serial number

of 12R299 I can no loner make out the type code very well but it looks like CD-BR or it could be

someones mistake of CB-BR

Does the guy that sells the xo upgrade have a website?

Thanks Bill glad to be here I've found a wealth of info,

I was planning on selling these when I initially sought out the site over a month ago but

and after reading about my cornwalls I've decided that may not be a smart thing to do.

It'll probably take me a while to couple the speakers with some decent gear but no reason I shouldn't

get the crossovers straight while waiting

It's very cool that you've decided to get them back to spec with the crossovers. New caps will have them sounding as close to factory as you can get.

The improvement in sound from that one small thing is impressive.

It doesn't necessarily take a large investment to get gear that will complement the CW's nicely. Can be done quite reasonably if desired.

Bob Crites has helped me out with crossovers on several occasions. Excellent resource and regular good guy.
