Milkdud35
Hello all, I am a newbie here on the forum. I have done tons of research on speakers and pretty much have decided on the RB-61 Recommended set up except with a Sub-12. I have one problem though. The RC-52 is 10.5 inches deep and 7 inches high. The ledge I have for the center is only 7" deep and only 4" from the bottom of my mounted plasma. I was thinking of building in a recessed shelf below this ledge and mounting the RC52 flush to the wall. Since it is front ported i was thinking there should be no real accoustical issues with this. Will there be any audible distortion from having the speaker in the wall? The plan is a hole almost exactly the size of the speaker. Would you recommend some "breathing room" around it? Also do you see any problem laying the RB61 on their side as opposed to standing (for the same reason as above)? Thanks for your help! Moderators Youthman Posted February 22, 2008 Moderators Share Posted February 22, 2008 I would not think there would be a problem mounting the center speaker flush since it is front ported. The RB-61 might be a different story because of the way the horn is designed. It would be on it's side so dispersion might be a problem. I'm not a 100% sure on this so can anyone clarify if I am correct on that?
BuyOtherSoundEquipment
A basic principle in speakers is for the cabinets to be as non-resonant as possible, so on the surface it sounds like the recessed RC-52 might be the way to go. Can't say with any authority that the sideways RB-61s will sound better or worse. My gut says that since Klipsch designed them to stand vertically, it would be best to keep them that way. WMcD
I think you will love these, particularly with the sub. Some of the language on the website's description could lead to what I think is a misinterpretation, or more concern than is warranted. The blurb on the RB-61 says the front firing port makes installation into custom cabinets "a snap". But that is not mentioned in the blurb on the RC-52. I'm quite sure the same principles apply. I'd say flush mounting for the RC-52 will work very well. I'd think that there is no reason to leave much "breathing room" because there is nothing to breath. In fact, a gap could cause some minor problems in theory. Mostly niggling. If I was doing it, I might leave a little room to put in some cloth padding, or maybe foam-core, just so that the finish does not get messed up. On the other hand, there is nothing in the blurb on the RB-61 about turning it on its side. But obviously the RC-52 is a close cousin which is on its side. Further, the tractrix on the RC-52 is said to address the issue of interference with other drivers. Presumably this is to explain away any issue with lobing in the horizontal when the drivers are side by side. The same should apply to the RB-61 when similarly oriented. The only remaining niggle is that the RB-61 blurb does state that it should be faced toward the listener. That is the general advice for most Klipsch speakers. But you're thinking of that anyway, I'm sure.. As you can see, I believe that sauce for the goose is sauce for the gander. What is good for the RC-52 is good for the RB-61. Moderators dtel Posted February 23, 2008 Moderators Share Posted February 23, 2008 They were not really designed to lay on their side but unless you room is really wide you may not notice a difference ? Try it, I know it's not the same speaker your talking about but.....
Moderators dtel Posted February 23, 2008 Moderators Share Posted February 23, 2008 The center is the same way, and I know Forte ll's were not made to lay on their side, I can't hear a difference ?
Milkdud35
Thanks for all the info guys! I planned on leaving enough room in the recess to have some kind of padding or other protection from scuff marks. If there will be no resonance issues then i'm going for it. As far as the RB-61's go they will be in a book case that is about 19 inches wide so i'll have plenty of room to play with for angling them towards my seating area. THe problem is I will have my reciever and DVR and DVD in the same built-in so i didn't want to waste real estate by having the Bookshelves vertical. Hopefully there will not be too much difference laying them horizontal. You'd think no matter what type of bookshelf you put them on they would work...they are after all, bookshelf speakers. =) We'll see what happens. Does anyone else have any opinion on horizontal orientation of the RB-61's? My room is about 16' wide and 25' long with a wall on one side and open to the dinnig room on the other. my seating is about 16' away. Sitting 16' back would probably help, try it out, see how it sounds.
Milkdud35
I know I want these speakers and I'm sure there will not be a problem with the set up so i'll be putting in my order for the speakers in about 3 weeks. In the mean time i'm going to start the recessed shelf and a couple ofther preparatory things. Once I have the speakers and everything installed I'll let you all know how it turns out. I'll post some pics too. Thanks for your time.
