Without knowing your budget it is a hard question to answer, even so everybody is different. Whatever sounds good to someone may not to somebody else. My comments are regarding receivers in the $500 to $ 1000 range. It is obvious that a $5000 receiver can't be compared to the $ 500 one.

The big players are Harman Kardon, Onkyo, Pionner (elite series), Denon and Yamaha.

I really like the sound of HK, warm and clear. The set up is fairly easy and straight forward and it is loaded with features. I know they have a lower wattage rating but it is conservative and they will do as good as any of the other brands with higer rating. They also have plenty bells and whisles and there customer service is outsanding.

The Pioneer Elite is my second favorite. The set up is a simple as it could be and it does sound good and do like a lot of features.

Denon sound as good as Pionneer but I found the set up a little harder then most.

The yamaha is build like a tank but the setting are also a little hard to me.

I don't know anything about Onkyo but a lot of people like them.

If you are passing the $ 1000 mark, I would look into separate( preamp+ amp). For a little more money emotiva and outlaw will give you the best bang for the buck.

Check emotiva.com and outlawaudio.com

The good news is since it is really about what sounds good to you, best buy has most of the big brand receivers and the RF 82.

Give them a demo and see for yourself.

Falcon's right on.....

really take your time and asses your needs.....do you want/need HDMI....do you need preamp outs for possible addition of separate power amps in the future....Size of room ...budget....will you want to possibly use it for 2 channel listening

I'd make a list of everything you need in a system....go through the specs online ....narrow it down to 3-4 possibilities and go listen to the major players

Outlaw audio would be my first choice if I did not need HDMI.

I have the RF-35's (they are basically the 82's, but the model year before). Anyway, I was running them off of a standard pioneer reciever VSX-d811s

I was pretty happy with that setup, then got convinced that I should get an amp as to not short the spearkers on power, so I went with a Rotel 1075 (120x5). I have been extremely happy using the reciever as a pre and then the amp for power.

I have been very happy with the sound of the pioneer and would recommend it to anyone, but like everyone says you have to hear it first.

I do plan on upgrading for the HDMI, dual zone, multi-room, and new DTS-HD format, but if it wasn't for some added bells and whistles there is no reason I'd upgrade.

I'm looking at the VSX-1018TXH-K model for about $600. Based on my experience with pioneer (not elite), i'd imagine that this one will be very similar in sound production.
