Wild horns and tasting Altecs

Cornwalled

Recommended Posts

Hi All!

I was browsing the internet, and came across two interesting auctions at eBay.

The first one is a set of ALE horns with Western Electric drivers. Never seen anything like 'em before. Here's the link:

I'm curious what you all think about them.

The other one is just kind of funny. I was looking for Altec horns, and came across this one with an interesting typo, I'm sure you all will see it too, it's good for a laugh. Made me chuckle anyway.

Here it is: http://cgi.ebay.com/aw-cgi/ebayISAPI.dll?MfcISAPICommand=ViewItem&item=1329564128&t=0&r=0&indexURL=0&photoDisplayType=2#ebaylargephotohosting

I've been wanting to try a set of Altec horns with the Cornwall bass section. Curious what anyone else has to say on the subject.

Take care,

Jon

Jon,

The four way horns look very good, they should work great with tubes.Damn the bass horn is long, the drivers look to be in perfect shape and the quality of the drivers is quite impressive.

Hmmm $5000 they are asking for these! One would need a large room to fit them.

The Altec tweeters look beaten up,the owner did not take care too much.May still be worth the green.

TheEar,

I think those Altec horns are beaten up because the owner tasted them too much, and didn't do enough TESTING..lol

Mike Lindsey,

I'm not sure what the exact drivers are, but if you go to their website at www.kbrooksaudio.com and poke around, you should be able to find out.

Keep us posted,

Jon

Well, it has a bidder now...

I really dig the external crossover that's just to the right of the bass driver. I wish there was a closeup of it. I wonder if there's any rattle with the bass horn? There are 3 separate pieces that are screwed together that make up that behemoth!

Jeeez, it's up to $9000 dollars, and still reserve not met! Not that it matters to me, I wasn't planning on buying them anyway, lol. I think it's pretty ridiculous sometimes what these horns go for. I love the sound of em, but honestly, there's not that much to them. Installing/mounting the horn and driver that somebody ELSE already designed, and building a crossover. It boggles the imagination how that collection of horns can possibly cost $9000 to make. Probably supply/demand that drives it up more than anything. Just like the old Klipschs (heritage series). Sort of a shame, demand is so great for them since they're not making them anymore. I'd like to some day get a pair of K-horns, but they seem to always go for prices that are out of my reach. Not that I can complain about my cornwalls at all though, because I love them. They'd probably be better for the current room situation actually.
