  1. Very glad to hear that and I hope everything else came out OK.
  2. Well, I, for one, have absolutely no plans to yield so much as an inch to this storm. I'm staying put; I'm leaving all of my equipment connected; I plan to use my equipment as if there are no hurricanes anywhere; in other words, thumb my nose at nature's fury and conduct business as usual. BTW, I'm in southern Arizona.
  3. The 525 is rated at 70wpc X 5. Since doubling the amplifier power yields a mere 3dB increase in max volume (another way to say this is that halving the amplifier power reduces the max volume by 3dB), reducing the amplifier's rated output from 70wpc to 55wpc only reduces the max volume of your speakers by about 1.5dB. That's a barely noticeable decrease in volume and since it would only even come into play at maximum volume, you won't even notice it. Given the efficiency of the Synergy's, they will still play louder than 90% of the rest of the speakers on the market, even with a 55wpc amplifier. This is a real, real general analysis.
  4. Good Luck to all of you east coasters from a former east coaster.
  5. Alright, now don't anyone do anything drastic, and this might even be common knowledge for all I know, but I read the other day that Diana Krall is engaged to Elvis Costello! Engaged in what?, you say. Well, engaged to be married, apparently. Talk about wanting to hurl!!
  6. I had already wondered if some good samaritan, or other benefactor had agreed to underwrite the settlement since it occurred so quickly.
  7. Gary: Actually, I was going to comment that it would be a scream (no pun intended) to hear the Dead do Werewolves. You have it downloaded? I would be eternally grateful (again, no pun intended) for a copy. Of course, I would gladly pay any costs involved. How is the best way to do it?
  8. From the liner notes of "I'll Sleep When I'm Dead (An Anthology): My friend Burt Stein (who was also my A&R man at Asylum records) and I were on vacation in Kauai, Hawaii. We were riding past the cane fields with a young woman whose acquaintance I'd made the previous evening and she was taking us to a friend's "plantation house." She mentioned sort of off-handedly that her friend wasn't home; that we might, in fact, have to break in. I turned to Burt. "Dear Joe," I said, thinking of Joe smith, the president of the record company, "Send lawyers." "And guns," Burt added. I said, "And money."
  9. Sounds like a humourous, bouncy little tune with some oddly juxtaposed images when, in fact, it is quite a nasty indictment of that particular lifestyle.

Any ideas? ---------------- Well, boomac, I can't say that I have any inside knowledge, but I've always thought that "Werewolves of London" was a cynical send-up of the foppish British gigolo/"gentleman" who dresses impeccably and is impeccably groomed, but who is an amoral, ruthless conman who preys on lonely women ("Little old lady got mutilated late last night") and who will smile to your face while he shanks you in the back ("He'll rip you lungs out, Jim"), then goes to Trader Vic's for a pina colada. Of course, I could be totally wrong and it could be a fantasy about werewolves who roam the British urban landscape.
  11. Errr, ahhh, well, of course the 102B uses EL84's. Glad to see that you guys are proofreading. Keep up the good work. (Where's the red-faced smiley?)
  12. The Jolida 102B uses 4 EL34/6BQ5; 2 12AT7; and 1 12AX7. The correct bias setting is 30Mv. I don't know if this is the correct bias setting for the 202A, so take it with a grain of salt.
  13. Actually, he had quit smoking some 8 years before he was diagnosed. After he was diagnosed, he started smoking again. At the time the disease hit, he had been on a health kick for several years and ran and worked out regularly. In fact, when he first started noticing the shortness of breath, he thought he was just pushing the workouts too hard. Mesothelioma is linked more with asbestos exposure than smoking. That's not to say that smoking doesn't increase the risk, but it's hard to say exactly what might have triggered the cancer. Funny thing is that Waddy Wachtel is conspicuously absent from the final album. Anyone know if there's a reason for that?
  14. From what I saw on the VH1 show, it looks like Jorge Calderon deserves a lot of credit for getting the last record made. There was that one section of the recording sessions when WZ kept flubbing the timing on one song, I forget which one, and Jorge was gently, but firmly, pushing him through the pain and fatigue to finish the song. It's a real blessing to have someone who will push us through the pain and fatigue when necessary.

Ry Cooder also played on the album. I was a big WZ fan too. I have always thought that one of the greatest misconceptions that has ever befallen a recording artist was the perception that WZ was a writer of "cute novelty tunes" like Ray Steves and Jim Stafford. "Werewolves of London" was both a blessing and a curse. It was the giant hit that all artists dream of, but, for a lot of people, it pidgeon-holed him into that novelty tune genre. RIP
  16. Hello! I LOVE New Orleans; LOVE the Iguanas; LOVE the Maple Leaf; and LOVE Jaques-Imo's. Say hello to all for me!
  17. My only concern with using the RB-25's with that subwoofer is that the 25's have a low frequency limit of 49Hz. My guess would be that the low freqency output of that subwoofer might peak at about the same frequencies that the RB-25's low frequencies also hit their peak. This could make the system boomy in, say, the 80Hz. to 120Hz. region. The RB-15's don't go nearly as low as the 25's and might integrate a lot better with that sub. Is it possible to bring the sub when you audition the 15's and 25's? If so, I would bring the sub and listen very carefully for how both the 15's and 25's integrate with the sub.
  18. Will you be using a subwoofer with the RB-15 or RB-25 and, if so, at what frequency will you be crossing over to the sub?
  19. Thanks, guys, I think that's exactly what I needed to know.
  20. I have a pair of Quartets which I love. I'm thinking about looking at Forte's or Forte II's to replace the Quartets. My thinking is that the Forte's go a little bit deeper (32Hz vs. 38Hz), but I really have no complaints about the Quartets in the bass department. In fact, I find the bass on the Quartets to be plenty for my room. My concern is that although the bass on the Forte's goes deeper, it might also be boomy in the mid and upper bass regions. Can somebody tell me how the mid and upper bass is on the Forte's? I know that no one can tell me how Forte's will sound in my room, but can someone advise how they sound in comparison to Quartets? TIA
  21. I would never be so presumptuous as to tell any individual what he, or she, could, or couldn't, hear. There has never been, however, a study published where any individual could denonstrate the ability to differentiate between solid state amps, to a statistical certainty, beyond chance, when using double-blind conditions. There are differing opinions as to whether double-blind testing is a valid methodology when testing amplifiers, however, people can demonstrate the ability to differentiate the difference between tubes and solid state.
  22. Good news! Glad all went well.
  23. That sound you hear is the drool dropping from my chin on to the keyboard. Congrats on an outstanding purchase!
  24. I've had ether twice in my life, both times in the 1950's. If she had ever had ether, she would be jumping for joy at the thought of anesthetic through an I.V. When I had surgery on the other end a couple of years ago (once you hit 50, everything goes through THAT end), the anesthetic was one of the best parts.
