  1. Thanks people, Last night I bought a DLS-4000 at Hi-Fi-Buys and I think I got a decent deal. Before I bought it, I went to every place in town and tried out every sub I could get my hands on over the last couple of nights. There were none of the high enders around like the Velo DDs. And noone has SVS. So I just checked out what was available. Honestly, and I don't mean to get negative here but there wasn't even one that truly impressed me all that much. Mostly because I am using the sub in a music application. Lots of them sounded fine for HT. I just thought that they all had just a too much boominess and distortion. Now I understand why there are the big dollar subs. I am sure they are probably what I was really looking for but I just couldn't afford them. So I settled for the DLS-4000 which was actually one of the best I heard. I think the RSW-12 sounded a hair better, but was was way more expensive. So anyhow I got it home and played with it for a couple of hours. Now I think I am going to have to go back and get a second one. Then, I think I will be satisfied. I am using these with a pair of LaScalas. I paid $378 for the first one. Maybe I can get a better deal on the second. I don't think that a single $800 sub would have done much better than one DSL-4000. So I don't feel too badly about buying a second. Actually I'm thinking two of these for $800 isn't really too bad. I was going to get the SVS PB-2 ISD for $899 plus shipping. Does anyone know if one of those SVS-PB-2 ISD would be better than 2 DSL-4000s? I can still bring the first DSL-4000 back. Thanks for any info.
  2. Thanks for the input. This is good information.
  3. Thanks for the solid advice. What is so special about the servo controls?
  4. Tony, Yup, I kind of figured. I referred to a past post about LaScalas and subs, and got all the recommended ones from that. Most were priced really high. The DD models are well over $2500. I could get Khorns for that. So, I figured I'd ask the forum about the lower priced models and whether it is worth it to bother at all. I am not THAT short on bass, but when I add my cheapo Sony HT sub into the mix just for kicks, it definitely makes a difference. A nice sub would be a very nice addition. I guess I was kinda after some "poor mans Khorns". If it could be cost effective.
  5. Tom, Is that Belle stock from Klipsch? Looks like alnico horn driver, crossover, and wiring I haven't seen. Thanks
  6. Has anyone heard this unit? Comments? How does it compare to the KSW or RSW subs? Any info is appreciated. Thanks
  7. Has anyone heard this unit? Comments? Looking to use with LaScalas. Thanks
  8. Someone tried this same scam on my 12 year old son who was selling his paint ball gun on Ebay. He brought the offer made to my attention. Same old scam. He was to be overpaid and return some of the money. Needless to say now my son knows a little more.
  9. Justin, I have a pair of 1990 black laq LaScalas, and I'm interested in a pair of Khorns. Please email. Thanks
  10. GT, Looks like a nice pair for the $$. The picture makes it look like the broken cap is not original. Looks cleaner / darker than the other components. Maybe it was replaced. Does the other speaker sound OK when playing alone? I am assuming after seeing the picture that only one speaker is a problem and the other is OK. I would try reconnecting the cap the same as the other crossover and see if the sound improves. It may be that simple. Although the electronics look old and dirty, nevermind. Eventually they all look that way unless you work extra hard to keep them clean. Everything may work just fine when connected properly. If not, then you are probably looking at some cross over work or replacement. I would also open the bass cabinet and inspect and tighten the woofers. You still have a very nice pair of Belles.
  11. Everytime I tried it, the sound was thin and lacking.
  12. I will wait, still count me in. The EH-7591 monsters are sounding fine for now. In fact very fine.
  13. Sounds like you need some Grover Washington Jr. "Mister Magic"...... That oughta take care of the situation.
  14. In addition to what is listed below: Another pair of '81 HOL Heresys Pair of '83 HBR Heresys Pair of '77 Cornwalls
  15. My HT receiver (Sony) is able to configure the rear surrounds as either high or low to accomodate your type of situation. I am not familiar with your HT receiver, but there are those out there to solve your issue.
  16. Sounds like lots of LaScala / Sub fans out there. Sometime I'll have to give it a try. I'm sure it does what everyone is saying. Hey, has anyone ever put their LaScalas out doors and listened to them from a distance, say 30 yards or more away? For those who have, what do you think about the bass response then? What did the neighbors think? Did the cops come?
  17. Charles, Allright Man, congrats. . I'm glad you got them. Grant had offered me the same deal yesterday afternoon, but I was reluctant to buy them sight unseen, just in case. So I passed. I am pretty sure you got an excellent deal. The seller is a polite patient guy and he gave everyone their fair chance. Congratulations.
  18. Good Luck, and take care. The path shows it coming right over the top of our place in Georgia as well. Hope it takes a turn.
  19. These speakers are probably already gone by now. However, the way I left it with the seller was that if they are still available next Wed the 18th, I will go and get them. I will be up in Charlotte to see The Dead, and they are just a short distance from there. So no problem. I tried everything possible to free up time to go get the horns before then, but it just wasn't in the cards. Too Too busy. As I mentioned, the seller seems like a nice guy. We talked for quite a while, and I am convinced these are very nice horns with a few minor dings. I believe they have been treated well over their life span from the equipment discussion we had. He was using SET amps. Can't hurt anything with one of them. I would recommend that anyone who can jump on the deal NOW, go ahead and do it. It may already be too late. I would like to see someone on this forum acquire these because realistically next week is WAY too late. They won't be there.
  20. Craig, right now I'm at .26. I will take your advice and go down some more. Thanks Lynn, I also put 2 matched pair of JJ ECC 83s in my LK-72, and it is playing better than it ever has as well. At the same time I put in some EH 7591, monster size valves. They are OK, but I will probably replace them with the JJs once I hear how the first production run performs. They are physically just too big. Arfz, I believe I had a matched quad of Sovtech Russians 7189 equivalents in the 299 (Craig would know). They were not too shabby by the way. The amp really sounded VERY good before I made the change. I did not really need any new tubes. But the JJs have an "almost NOS" sound to them. They really increased the depth of the sound stage. I was just trying them out, and I am glad I did. If I didn't have some Amperex Bugle Boys in my 222, I'd toss a quad in that unit as well, immediately. I think they sound that good.
  21. I don't run a sub on my 2 Ch. LaScala system. Currently I have a Scott LK-72 in use and am using a DBX-1231 EQ to actually reduce the bass significantly. Craig and I went through this discussion last night. This is due to the amp having some excess bass output. However, this amp is a great match for the LaScalas, and I recommend matching the Las with an amp known for some good bottom end. That will sure help. You could end up with too bright a system if the amp is not matched well. Even adding a sub then won't sound quite right.
  22. Anyone try these out yet? I just tossed a matched quad into my Scott 299 a couple of hours ago. So far, very nice! Improved detail in both extreme lows and highs, and passages of high emphasis just jump right out at you crisp and clean. Great 3D music. It seems like they really tightened up the amp, like it responds quicker and seems to have more overhead. The corns sound just fantastic. I put the EL 84s in my 299, which should really have 7189s. I biased a hair cooler, and everything seems just fine for now. I Don't know if this is a good idea for those without full bias adjustment. For the price I'm not too worried really, and I recommend these when your NOS Telefunkens and Amperex Bugle Boys wear out, or when you are just looking for some new EL-84s. Very very nice (for now).
