  1. The freak of freaks. What else can you say?
  2. To anyone interested, I saw a very nicely restored pair of 14s on ebay. Personally they do not do anything for me, but I've seen some get excited at Altecs. So, go look becasue they are pretty. I'll say that much. Anyhow, are 14s a good model? Forgot to say http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3059761282&category=14993 It says something like "Klipsch killers" and "forget about cornwalls."
  3. Craig, If that's the case, then don't bother. I don't think I'd want that much untested tinkering done anyhow. Sounds like an experiment. Both my amps are perfect as is. I use them both almost everyday. Ryan made it sound like an easy mod to get even better sound. Well who wouldn't be interested in that? Like if we weren't having this done, the amp was inferior. That's how I took it. I need to hear a 299D. I would know instantly if it was any better. The fact is that Scott kept evolving their designs so quickly, if each progressive design wasn't an improvement, something would be wrong. I would expect the newest amps to have advantages. So Ryan does have a point. At least you are taking the time to investigate and understand the true performance that can be achieved. I can appreciate that.
  4. Craig, Glad to hear you are looking at it. I know you are busy. Maybe some others on this forum can comment if they know the answer. Surely these filters existed on other vintage amps as well for the same reasons of taming poor phonograph signals from back in the day. Anyhow the Scotts are playing pefectly as usual. Just wondering if they could be further improved (easily). It sounds like this could be a hassle of a mod. I'd be interested in seeing the mod on a schematic when you get the time. Keep the solder flowin'
  5. The subject of the 12db high and low end filters in the Scott 299 and 299B seems to have fizzled out. I have been waiting to see what was found. Supposedly removing these filters improved the sound quality and range, and cleared up scope trace distortions on the high and low end. My question is to Craig, Mark, and anyone else on if they know if there is a significant audible improvement with the filters removed. Ryan, we already heard you say there was, "so 299s and 299Bs sucked" without this mod. In building old super het radios and trying to align them, I have seen clearly that the best scope trace is hardly ever the best sound to your ears. Tuning for the ears always seems to detune the scope pictures a little bit. So what's the answer? Should the filters be removed for better sound, or is this a waste of time and money? Craig, did you ever complete your tests on this issue? I'm not as interested in scope pictures as in audible improvements. I would bet the scope pictures do improve, but can you hear it?????
  6. Craig is right on how the bidding works. But when someone has a high bid in place and you di lower, it immediately tells you that you are outbid and need to place a higher bid. But it will list you in the bid history. You should see your 2 bids. If you have DSL the feedback should come almost immediately. No matter what you do on Ebay, it's hard to make a mistake. If you are not logged in and try to bid it forces a log in. It's all automatic. Something went quite wrong.
  7. Hey Gary, Mind me asking what such a toy runs these days? You said that your existing music collection sounds better, right?
  8. I just built a new bedroom in the basement for my 14 year old son. He was in with his younger brother but is definitely ready for his own room, so the project. He is now the proud owner of the 2 Ch. Denon/Heresy combo listed below. We rigged up his portable CD and DVD players with power supplies and patch cords. The kid's in heaven. Of course I don't really care for all his music. But he does Zep, and Metallica sometimes. So not all bad. I bought that particular pair of heresys off ebay over the summer because they were identical to the first pair of Klipsch I ever had. They image better than my corns and Las hands down. I never connected them to either Scott in fear that I would buy another one. We need food more. Are we spoiling our kids too much?
  9. The whole thing doesn't make sense. The old man was working on Heritage style speakers (Jubilee) right to the end, right? If the marketing dept. knew they had no market, why have the project continue (PWK marketing vapor ware?) Was the home version of the jubilee just a concept creation? Or was it that once the big guy was finished, the young'uns changed the game and shelved it to concentrate on the more modern profitable marketplace? Something tells me today's management sees very modest future in Heritage products. Or is it being saved for a grand opening of some sort?
  10. Question to the moderators. If the picture of PWK and the Jubilee is only 2 years old, and it was said in the other Jubilee thread (by moderator) that "Klipsch can't find a way to sell the Jubilee", then why did Klipsch have the old man continue to persue the project? Didn't marketing already know there was no home market? Surely the picture depicts a home speaker like the Khorn? Sounds like as soon as the old man was out of the way, the direction changed. Sounds like if he was still there, there would be a Jubilee in the Heritage line up. Now it looks like the Jubilee is just used for vapor ware marketing. How come PWK kept designing Heritage products if Klipsch marketing says they can't be sold? Why? A little riff in the family???
  11. Thanks for the info. It's what I thought. Craig, I am really interested in this. It makes sense that an improvement may be possible. Please let us know what you see and hear. I expect this would be an easy change to make. Thanks
  12. Anyone remember the "who uses an EQ" thread? Allot of people said that EQs were no good and added distortion, but I think it's probably the same as using the tone controls and/or loudness button. I use(d) both and loved it. I didn't get audible distortion the way I used the EQ. I always used an EQ for the last 20+ years with all the Klipsch speakers I owned. It not only made the system sound better (using it correctly), but the Klipsch could simply handle the pushing. Since I got into tubes, I dumped the EQ, but I use the Scott tone controls albeit very minimally and sometimes not at all. Source varies tremendously. The loudness buttons on the units listed below work great! No booming, good balance, and they switch out automatically.
  13. Are the high and low filters you guys are talking about in addition to the switch filters (rumble and scratch) on the face of the unit that the user can control? Do the switch filters further cut off what is already filtered?
  14. I went to Home Depot and got 8 (2 sets of 4), 1/2" tall feet. I put 2 back to back in each corner of the bottom of the chassis with the appropriate length screw going directly into the original chassis holes for the feet. This got the unit 1" off the shelf for good air circulation. It doesn't look too bad either because the face plate hangs down pretty low.
  15. The Scotts listed below both are excellent in my opinion. They both have their personalities so I matched them to the speakers as you can see. But they sound pretty similar. The 222 has more bottom end than the 299 I have. However, as great as my 222 sounds, I think the 299 is a little better due to the more guts it has. Hell, I love both and would buy either all over again.
  16. Sorry, I see that the MSN.com speed testing is no longer available. However, as you found (me too) there are plenty of other places to do it. I just tried a couple of misc. ones and found my connection here at work is 238 Kbytes/sec, pretty darn good, actually great. But the idea is that you can see what you actually get in both directions. Important stuff since we all pay good bucks and need max. bandwidth. Sorry about the steering you wrong. MSN must have just shut it off in the last 4-6 weeks. I was using it not too long ago.
  17. Thanks for the info. I guess I will try it out and see how it sounds. I wouldn't spend $300.00 for PC sound. I would buy a nice DVD player that does all the formats, and just burn the material onto CDs/DVDs. But I think this card will do for playing the PC directly into the system and still getting really nice sound. Thanks again.
  18. You can go onto MSN.com and do a speed test to see your speed in case you haven't tried it. Get onto the site and type "speed test" in the search box. The site will take you to it. It is interesting to try it repeatedly becuase you will see if your ISP is ripping you off or if you get what you pay for. I had cable and it absolutely FLEW, sometimes. I would easily get around 200K bytes / sec on downloads. But when the neighbors got on, it sucked. Now I have DSL and consistently get around the advertised 187Kbytes / sec. This sounds slower but it is constant always as mentioned earlier in this thread. Always do the speed test a few times to see the real deal. Good luck.

Good luck.
  20. I am adding an Audigy 2 ZS soundcard to my PC which is connected to my Scott 222 / Las 2 Ch. system. I download music and want something better than the integrated sound that came on my PC. I know this card has all kinds of HT and gaming capabilities, but I got it because it had some decent specs. Has anyone fed this card into their tube systems and/or Heritage series speakers with any good results? Does this come anywhere close to equating my PC sound into the Scott with a home audio CD player connected directly to the Scott? The card should arrive this week and I have some pretty high expectations that I could play streamed or downloaded music directly into the Scott without always having to burn CDs, or I could use the PC CD drive to play CDs, and have audiophile sound. Am I lunching or could this be?

  22. Most everyone in the 2 channel forum has heritage series speakers and rebuilt tube integrated amps from the late 50s, and 60s. A few people here have higher end tubes. I think everyone USED to have s/s amplification but learned that the horns are most compatible with these old tube amps. I am in the same boat. I was a Yamaha and Denon owner for years. Still own Denon. But the rebuilt Scott's listed below blow those sub 1K s/s amps right away. No comparison. Highly recommend you reconsider the tubes. Buy and old Eico, Scott 222 or 299 (preferred) off EBay and sent it to NOSValves. That may be the best you can do for under 1K.
