  1. My wife says I'm a bear to get up in the morning. Rick
  2. There is a pair of the plastic K-400 horns on Ebay right now: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3042417504&category=3276 Rick
  3. Have you seen these? I think they were made under license to PWK using EV drivers. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3041280484&category=32861 Very impressive! Rick
  4. I second the Hitachi S500 series. They have better CRTs than the F500s and a 5 lens system vs 4 in the F. The Fs are very good for the money if you can get one on sale though. I bought a 57S500 from CC (in Fla. I'm in RI). I had bought a Samsung 5065 DLP monitor from BB but I couldn't stand it and brought it back. The only Mits that they have are the low end stuff 313 series with their own numbering so you can't compare with other sellers. Rick
  5. The styrofoam is easy. Take an 18" piece cut to height and place it accross the corner, then push the speaker home to form it. The foam will crack in the right places. Rick
  6. All this work made me very tired, here I am arising from my nap. Rick
  7. Thanks for the invite Greg but I'll have to pass. Don't worry you can do it. This was my first time ever with veneer. I practiced on a sheet of plywood so I could test finishes then the old bookshelf speakers, a bit rough but I learned, then the sub before the big project. I bought raw veneer off ebay but it is easier to use sheet veneer here is a good site to look at: http://www.tapeease.com Here is a pic of the second Khorn. Rick
  8. I tried disposable foam brushes but the glue ate them for lunch, so I bought a handful of 99cent bristle brushes at Lowes and used those. I just finished the second horn this AM and am listening now.The Greatful Dead, Chicago and Alan Jackson sound great after a week off! Oh yea, my wife is even pleased with my labors. Rick
  9. I can vouch for Bob. I got a pair of diaphrams for my K77's from him. Good price, well packed and a snap to install. Sound great too! Rick

I bought a Hitachi 57S500 two weeks ago. I'm still in awe of the picture quality for the money. Go to CC and look at one. If you like it, PM me and I'll give you the low down on how to get the best deal on one. Rick
  11. Here is a picture of a rope caulked squaker: http://forums.klipsch.com/idealbb/files/rope.jpg I bought the caulking, Frost King Fingertip Rope Caulk, at Lowes. It is eight of those lines wide and just under $5 a box. I used just under five boxes to do the squakers and tweeters. I too auditioned one treated and one untreated squaker. There is a noticable improvement in "blare" on a Chicago CD. A very inexpencive updrade. I read somewhere, in a link here, that felt applied to the mouth of the squaker horn cuts down the distortion in the horn. Any truth to that? Rick
  12. Greg, Here is my SW 12 before I veneered it (another test project) I sanded it with 150 grit and a Dewalt sander to provide a good grip for the cement. Rick
  13. I used Weldwood Gel Formula contact cement and a solid roller about two inches wide. With my 250lbs it had plenty of force. I put two coats of cement on all the new wood to seal the grain and one coat on the birch. I also glued on the edging. I did not like the bond with the preapplied iron on adhesive on my sample project, a pair of KG1.2s. Rick
  14. I rewired the woofer with 12ga Monster Wire but left the mid and hi wires the same. I don't want to feed them too much or treat them too well, they will get too fat! I did clean all the ends though. Some say to put even smaller wire on to attenuate them. Rick
  15. No,Frzninvt. I used Band-it veneer edging. The hardest part was matching and taping the veneer sheets and trimming the edges. Ri
  16. While I'm at it, here is the rope caulked squaker (thank you John Warren) and corner coupling. Rope caulking is definately worth the effort! Rick
  17. Here is the same horn with a new coat of figured American black walnut veneer stained with boiled linseed oil and sealed with a hand rubbed semi-gloss poly finish. My wife wanted a sheen. Rick
  18. Here is my type B birch horn with stain and oil. Rick
  19. Has anybody ever seen one of these or have any info about it? http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3039320450&category=3284 I figured for the price it might be a cute toy. It should be here in a day or two. Rick
  20. Call 1-800-klipsch they should have what you need. Rick
  21. Back in business!! The replacement of the diaphram went very well, sounds as good as new. Thank all of you for your advice. Rick
  22. "If you haven't, cover the K-400 squawker horn with Dynamat or rope caulk from Home Depot. You'll get a calm, relaxed, smooth sound. I love that mod most" John, I put the rope caulk on the squaker of the speaker with the blown tweeter tonight. It took just over two boxes I bought from Lowes($4ea). I A/B'd the speakers with a Duke Ellington number from Music Choice and the difference is pleasing. I'll do the other one tomorrow after I get some more rope caulk and repair the blown tweeter. Rick
  23. I read somewhere once that one of the copy guard features could be defeated by taking a Magic Marker to the outside 1/4" of the disk. Could this be what your mark is? Rick
