  1. "Julie Andrews I'm not" I would say you should be thankful for that!!

  3. What does Dr. Bruce Edgar have his doctorate in?? I assume he's not an MD!!??!!
  4. Bruce Springsteen "Brothers under the Bridge"
  5. I'll make that "neanderthal"----My head works faster that my typing!!
  6. "Last night, for the first time since my return to the world of ham radio, I encounted such a "terrorist" . Bare with me a moment here since I believe that the problem of the FCC regulating the airwaves is analogous to our situation on the forum. I put out a CQ on 40 meters, only to be answered by an idiot who would did not identify himself and then proceeded to hurl gratuitious insults and obscenities. I asked him to identify with a call sign, he didn't so I immediately stopped the communication. Then I moved over to another frequency and he followed me there and continued the harassment. The jerk was purposely ruining ham radio for no apparent reason. The problem is that now there are alot of inexpensive used radios in the marketplace and the FCC cannot apparenty keep up with policing these illiterate unlicensed "terrorists" tresspassers who want to spoil things just for kicks or maybe out of anger or self loathing because they cannot or will not pass the test for a license. It is very difficult, but not impossible, to track down these offenders, but that is a drag and would take time. Some alternatives I have thought of are to switch communications to CW (morse code) figuring that for sure that will keep this riff raff at bay, and switching to more obscure bands and more obsure hours of operation." I'm very sorry to hear this and I wonder what time of the day this occurrence was? I spend about 95% of my time on CW and basically, that mode is fairly trouble free. We have had the odd "neaderthal" attempt to QRM our Transprovincial Net on 40m phone but, fortunately, its not too frequent. Are you under a different call sign now? http://www.qrz.com/ve3mfn
  7. "And show me a place that truly has Free Speech, and I'll show you a place that has a lot of people who mistrust and dislike each other because of hurt feelings." No! You are making this claim and the onus is on the claimant to provide proof. When you live in what is close to a "Nanny state" as I do, one becomes very leery of these kind of statements. I trust I'm not out of line with this!! I grant you have an unenviable task.......
  8. "For me, I am forever tuning to female vocals. If I can't get Maria Callas and Maria Muldaur to sound "right" the whole thing is scrap for me. If any component I insert doesn't pass that test, there is no second test. It's not that that's all I listen to. It's that when those female vocals are false, everything else sounds like hot-rodded Hi-Fi. When they are "plausibly realistic" to me, the rest sounds about right too." I think you're on to something here, as this is my observation as well, i.e. if the female vocals sound "right" to me the whole midrange presentation is overall very satisfying. BTW, I'm not being a wise guy but did you mean "symbols" or cymbals??
  9. Now THIS is a horn!!!! I wouldn't advice being too close to it when it sounds-----reasonable low end also!! http://www.lanternroom.com/lighthouses/wales/_thumbs/wales04.jpg
  10. I have for sale a McIntosh MPI-4 oscilloscope. I'm asking $1300.00 USD for it and am fairly firm in that price. The unit has seen very little use since it was completely serviced about 2 years ago. (now stored) Please PM me with an e-mail addr. or phone # for pics or further information. http://www.audioclassics.com/detail.php3?detail=MPI4&nav=brand I hope this is not an inappropiate place to list this, but most of the folks here seem quite knowledgeable re: Mac gear and know what it is........
  11. ---------------- On 5/31/2004 10:26:50 PM paulparrot wrote: cwm, Could you give more details on your living room situation? For instance, I'm assuming this measurement was with your windows closed. But do you pick up any road noises anyway? Is this with a furnace on? Air conditioning? How far away is your refrigerator? Is your living room open or does it have closed doors? Et cetera. Thanks. ---------------- The living room is about 19' long and 14' wide with an open "L" section at the one end of 10'deep and 8' wide. I'm on a country highway and there is only a moderate amount of traffic. (the outdoor ambient noise is much less than in the city). I do the reading when there is minimal traffic and no or little wind (windows closed). There is a large archway opening unto the dining room and the kitchen is through a normal sized door off the dining room. The refrigerator is fairly quiet, no A/C and no furnace running. In the winter when the furnace kicks in (FAO) my ambient level goes up to 42 dba. I'm convinced that a quiet listening environment allows for more low level detail in the music. If you're curious, my system consists of a pair of LaScalas (AA xovers with Hovland 1mfd shunt caps in the highpass section ( I like it!)along with a Velodyne ULD-15 sub. I use both a Bryston BP-25 preamp and PAS3 modded and a Bryston 3Bst (sweet amp in my estimation). I also use "bottles" when the mood strikes----Dyna ST-70 recapped. I have a Thorens TD-125 with a small stable of cartridges, a Philips CD player (modded output stage) which delivers a passable sound with decent CD recordings. I have the SLM through my interest in community noise etc......very handy tool.

  13. "The real question is which amplifier and loudspeaker combination most accurately reproduces a flat frequency response WITHIN .5, 1 or 1.5 dB at average, slow weighted, C scale of 70, 80, 90 and 100 dBs in a typical (what 12 by 12?) living room." The "C" scale is not representive of how you hear and its unfortunate that you dont have access to a professional grade SLM that will measure down to at least 30db or below. You would find it interesting to measure your listening room ambient noise level with a true Pro grade SLM. I have one ( ANSI type 2) and my country living room is 27dba which is subjectively very quiet. Now if you use "C" my reading is 42dbc. Most of that level is from low frequency sounds, which at that low of a level, we are all basically deaf to. I've evaluated several listening environments with this meter and the response from the house/apt owner is always amusing. The Radio Shack SLM is good for getting an overall level while listening to music,(or evaluating noise levels with broad spectrum sound) but is not constant enough in response to use for pure tones. The "A" meets the "C" weighting scale however when taking readings in high sound level night clubs or home stereos played at extremely high levels. With the Fletcher-Munson curves flattening out over 90dba, the bass energy subjectively and objectively is as loud as the mid band....
  14. Heck, I'm not too bad myself give me six beers and a shower stall.........
  15. Operatic tenor: Fritz Wunderlich (deceased) His rendition of "Ave Maria" brought tears to the eyes of devout atheists! Pop/Rock: Elvis Presley, Gordon Lightfoot, Little Richard. Jazz/blues: Buddy Guy, Muddy Waters, Satchmo, Frank Sinatra, David Clayton Thomas. H@ll, theres just so many great vocalists out there and they're all unique and enjoyable for the most part........
  16. Colin, Colin!!! Put on Patricia Barber's "Cafe Blue" and then, with a straight face, tell me that Krall's range and vocal smoothness can even approach Patricia Barber's!! Not to say that Krall isn't good BUT........
  17. With all due respect djk, its "bladder"........
  18. Having known people with OCD and witnessed the hell they can go through I would say its not a very humorous issue. Being "anal" I interpret as those who are chronic fuss budgets and over scrupulous, which I guess might be distantly related to OCD......A personal friend is on a heavy dosage of Luvox (an SSRI) as he was so caught up in the "counting" "touching" and intrusive obsessive thoughts that he became temporarily unemployable in his engineering field.
  19. Setting aside looks, I think one of the finest voices is Patricia Barber....excellent range and smooth as midnight velvet........
  20. "And most of those horn monitors were at least as good as any speakers today are and far better than most speakers today are." I'm curious as to what speakers you would put into this category i.e. which Altec Lansing, JBL, Tannoy etc.?? I think having heard a lot of high end "audiophile" speakers, the Heritage series hold their own quite well. I would like to hear the reissue of the Altec Lansing A7s, they're sure not giving them away and they say they've improved the high end extension beyond the old 10k rolloff........
  21. "Size DOES matter!" You really know how to hurt a guy....! Re: Big horns and their distance from the rear wall, I find that my LaScalas still have a little deeper sound stage when brought out about 1-1 1/2 ft from the rear wall. My home brewed Scanspeak 2x must be at least 3-4ft to image properly and, of course, dont have the dynamics of the horns....
  22. I've got to go put some liniment on my sides and then change my pants------funniest thread I've read in a while.....
  23. "No way is someone going to get 121 DBs with 50 watts as far as I can tell unless you stick your ear facing the speaker up close." hoggy Look up the speaker specs. on this site and then do the math........(RS meter is unsuitable for any serious evaluation of sound levels.) The comment about thermal compression by Warren is interesting, it complies with what I've read also, although in some rare cases (other speakers) I think the mechanical limits are met before thermal compression sets in. What the hell, we all know the Khorns will drive most people out of the room (a BIG one!) long before any of these things occur!! I've heard a lot of high end HIFI out there but for whatever reason these brutes seem to provide more musical satisfaction---must be that sense of amazing dynamic and just loafing along at "life like" levels...........
  24. "A hum that's not audio related? What, are you tasting it?" Ok....I guess I asked for that!! It sure as hell ain't Klipsch or any sound system I'm acquainted with!!
