  1. I thought I would give everyone a heads up. I have just placed a pair of Light Oak Heresy non-slant risers on eBay. The risers are in excellent condition and have soft rubber "grippers" on the bottom. If you are interested, go to item 5709946533. Thanks, Milton
  2. I bought a pair of Heresy's that were raw birch that were stained - it was impossible to make them look good no matter what I tried. I finally re-veneered them - it was MUCH easier than I expected and the results are fantastic! In fact, my Heresy's look virtually new. I am very happy with them. Hope this helps, Milton
  3. I have heard the same thing. I asked the same question about a week ago and got mixed answers. If the receiver has not been driven into the ground, a good Bang-For-Your-Buck ratio should be had. I am looking into an Outlaw or Denon receiver "pre-owned" for my system.
  4. I took TheEARs advise and re-did my sub settings at about 50-60 Hz. The results were VERY IMPRESSIVE! Bass response is as smooth as I have ever heard it - and very, very deep.
  5. I have had my best results using a directional antenna that is non-amplified. Amplification will also make noise more apparant. I have never used one, but a nice directional antenna that is motorized seems ideal. Good luck! Milton
  6. Hi Bob, Unless you put a large outside antenna up, I have found that a simple dipole works as good as anything. I have tried the expensive Terk antennas with no luck. There is no magic here, your best options are outdoors, as high up as you can go, and pointed in the direction of your source station. Milton
  7. No one has mentioned Sunfire. I think that they are extremely musical.
  8. Do you have the URL for that study? Thanks!
  9. Excellent! Congrats! I don't think that you will be disappointed!
  10. This thread has me thinking that maybe I should save up a bit of money and get something that I really would like. I have started a new thread regarding Outlaw audio. If anyone knows much about them, please let me know. Milton
  11. I have not heard much lately about Outlaw audio. I was looking at their 950/7100 seperates. Does anyone know how this would compare to something like the Denon 3805? Probably more than I need for my Heresys, but it is nice to know. Milton
  12. I think that would work very, very well. It would be nice to have a subwoofer that never taxes its resources.
  13. Either sub will do, but go with the one that your heart tells you to go with. I can tell you that even the tiny Sunfire Junior can keep up with the Heresy's VERY well - even in a larger room. I will probably get another Junior for my system. It does everything I want it to do. Milton
  14. Go to RadioShack and get their close-out $15 SPL meter. Then go to Half.com or Amazon and get the Avia DVD. You will have a State-Of-The-Art calibration system that is very easy to use. On a budget, get the SPL meter and use the THX optimizer that is included on some DVD's. This will also do the trick. Milton
  15. I don't know if anyone here got it, but I hesitated too long. I went to go bid and it was already sold. Oh well....
  16. Milton in Tampa here! Premature aging of rubber surrounds due to air exposure is a myth. However, direct radiating sunlight WILL break down the surrounds much faster. If your speakers are away from any direct sunlight source, you should be fine. Milton
  17. Does anyone have "real world" experience with using 2 subwoofers instead of just one? I have a Sunfire Super Junior subwoofer and am considering getting another one. Bob Carver of Sunfire highly recommends it. He says that bass output will increase by 6bd, and that placement becomes MUCH less of an issue since two subs will fill in any standing waves or cancelling waves caused by a single sound source. Thanks in advance for your responses. Milton
  18. Back in the '70's I had 2 pairs of 901's, each powered by a Carver M-400 "Cube" amplifier (200 watts per channel). The sound was as good or better than anything else I was hearing at the time. Of course, I lived in Key West, Florida, and had limited opportunity to hear anything else. In fact, the competition was Pioneer, JBL, and Kenwood. Only the JBL could come close.
  19. Nice old radio! I restore them myself. Milton
  20. It sound like you are making the Heresy's into Cornwall-like speakers. Let me know how that goes. Milton
  21. dr-dezibel, I use a Sunfire Super Junior with my Heresy's and it blends with them perfectly. I am sure that the Sunfire Signature will do a bang up job as well. In fact, the subs have very "fast" bass that is excellent for HT and music. So, I think ANY of the Sunfire series subs will keep up with your Heresys. You are very smart to consider room placement for your subwoofer. Most subwoofer placement becomes somewhat of a comprimise due to impractical placement areas and size of the sub (who wants a big black box in the middle of their room??). Since the Sunfire models are small, placement is easier and you are more likely to place them in their optimal position.
  22. Peter, I would wait and get the Heresys before getting the sub. They sound just fine without it. In fact, my other half hates the deep low bass (she thinks that it disturbs our neighbors) and we often listen to music or watch movies using the Heresy's alone. If you then decide that you need a subwoofer, spring for something more in line with the quality of the Heresys - like a Klipsch or Sunfire subwoofer. Milton
  23. Thanks everyone for your opinions. I currently have a Yamaha (should have said this up front) and feel that it is a bit too bright. I am going to look into the HK 7200. It sounds like a nice unit. Milton
  24. TheEar, You are a madman! Three Sunfire subs must really put some nice tight output! Your house must sound like one of those "pimpmobiles" I hear that have about 8000 watts fed into about 10 15" subs when you stand outside. I "only" have the Super Junior with my Heresy's and it blends P-E-R-F-E-C-T-L-Y. I have my crossover at around 80 or 90 Hz. Will I do better setting it around 50 or 60 Hz? Milton
  25. Does anyone have any suggestions on a 5.1 HT receiver for a Heresy setup. I am just changing jobs, so big, expensive receivers are not a possibility right now. I am considering a used Denon or HK unit. My budget is about $600.00. Any ideas? Milton
