Using a preamp section from a mass market receiver with tube amplification isn't going to net you the kind of improvement you are hoping for. Since you are building an HT system, you are stuck with the processing the Denon gives you. You probably are better off improving the quality of your solid state front end. Most here have decided it's best just build a separate system for two channel listening. You can get a very low powered tube offering to run with your K-horns for two channel, and maybe pickup another set of Heresies and a sub to complete your HT system. It's probably not much more money than what you are presently considering.

Nothing "dangerous" about going to the 4 ohm taps unless you decide to grab a power supply cap with a hand while your doing it. Even an unplugged tube amp can kill you. Keep one hand in your pocket while working. Going to the 4 ohm taps will cut your output in half, but the amp will be better able to handle swings in impedance. Makes sense with a SET amp, but I don't really understand it in this instance. Maybe Leo can enlighten us. Seems to me it's a double edged sword. You get more stability from the amp with the 4 ohm taps, but since the power is cut in half -- you'll go into class B much sooner. Of course, with K-horns -- you'll be at earblistering levels at four watts.

This thread is taking off, so instead of addressing individuals, I just want to address some of thoughts in the thread since I last posted. WWII -- Hitler was doing his thing, and we knew full well what was going on over there. We didn't jump into the war to stop Hitler. We were pulled into the war after Pearl Harbor. Our policies were completely isolationist in nature. A little bit of light reading regarding the relationship we had with Hitler in the early 30's is -- enlightening. I'm totally with HR here, and I appreciate his detailed posts. Everything he says is completely true. I would think the information he's providing is common knowledge. Evidently, that's not the case. Saddam's invasion of Kuwait was clearly "greenlighted" by the State Department. It's obvious he was set up. Anyone that fails to see this is not being intellectually honest. The question is "why"? If it wasn't about oil -- then what the hell was it about? I certainly apologize if I have given the impression that something shouldn't be done because of 911. As far as I'm concerned, it was an act of war. The question is, war against who? I thought rooting out the Taliban in Afganistan was an excellent response. The response was appropriate, and from all accounts -- very successful. O.K., Bin Laden 'got away', but we completely destroyed his infrastructure. Instead of planning ops out of Afganistan, and having the luxury of real estate with which to train operatives, and plan full scale attacks -- the clown is on the run, orchastrating small scale B.S. in Africa and Indonesia. He's back to square one -- with most of the world hunting his butt. I don't think he miscalulated our response, but what he didn't count on was the other Muslim Nations standing idle while we did it. He wanted a holy war against us -- he didn't get it. The issue with Irag has NOTHING to do with the above. To two are being connected so Americans will support a war against Iraq. It's brainwashing pure and simple. There will always be terrorism. It is certainly not feesable to go after the dozen countries that support it. The truth is, we will never be able to put a total end to it. As long as there are tyrants and those who believe violent action is the way to achieve a political end -- it will exist. There is simply no defense against a person who not only has the will to carry out the destructive act, but has also determined to use their very person as the delivery system. We can exercise a measured response against Iraq based on their U.N. violations. This way we can maintain U.N. support of our actions, and exercise a degree of containment regarding Saddams activities. We should concentrate on his delivery systems, and military infrastructure. I see no reason to bomb cities. That's B.S., and doesn't do anything but fuel more hate against us. While we are doing this, we could also flood the landscape with food and non-perishables for the civilians. We need the support of the populous. Alienating the whole region from us in not really all that smart. We need a balanced foreign policy for the Middle East. Israel needs secure borders, and the only way this is going to happen is if they move back to the borders marked out by the U.N. before the Six Day War. It sucks. The territory is spoils of war, and I can understand them not wanting to give it up. However, the Palestinian situation is bigger than they can handle, and so there are two choices. 1) Israel moves back to the pre-1967 borders, and works with the U.S. and the International Community in the establishment of a Palestinian State. The U.S. and U.N. should not "ask" Israel to do this. They should be ordered to comply with the resolutions they themselves have been in violation of. Failure to comply results in sanctions, and the withholding of funds and loans. They become subject to the same consequences just like everyone else. 2) We continue to do nothing, and Israel is forced into a position of eventually having to take drastic action against a people that have inhabited that land for thousands of years. Don't forget, Zionism was in response to the Holocaust, and the land partitioned out for an Israeli State. This was a good thing. However, the now descendants of the Holocaust victims, will soon be forced into the position of having to come up with a "Palestinian Solution". Don't misunderstand me, I am in no way saying that present day Jews in Israel are twisted, warped, and evil -- in the way the rulers of the Nazi party were. I'm only saying this is the problem an Apartheid state is eventually faced with -- what to do about the "enemies" in "our" land. Israel has already involved themselves in activity that many (including me) view as human rights violations, and I'm wondering if left unchecked -- what extent will they go, to effectively deal with the Palestinians. I see some irony playing out here that seems to be lost on most people. Taking people's property, putting them in refugee camps, policing their actiivities and lives -- hmmm, where have we seen this before? God is not a respector of persons. The Jews find favor with Him the same way everyone else does -- by doing what is right. Their place in history is special because God chose them to bring forth Messiah, through which we all find acceptance with God (Jew and Gentile alike). The only real estate God is truly concerned with, is the real estate of the human heart. No one has free license to treat another as "beneath" them.

As long as Americans are content to take their news from the A.P., and the front of the White House lawn -- we are going to continue to have an ignorant electorate. Propaganda is NOT news. Jeepers folks, listen to what 'they' are telling you, and then ask yourself: "Why are they telling me this?" We haven't had 'real' mainstream journalism since Watergate. There really needs to be some balance in our thinking. I read the Washington Times, and then scan the Washington Post. It's bewildering sometimes. I just figure the truth lies in the middle. Good points. I can't say I disagree with any of that. Yes, you are right, I should not equate Christianity with the Church of Rome in that part of their history. However, don't you agree that the actions and mentality of the early State/Church of Rome, parallels radical Islam fairly well? Winning people over to Christ at the point of the sword, instead of the power of the Word of God.

It's painted black, but almost appears to be birch plywood. The manual is outstanding. There is a tremendous amount of detail in it. Al, I spent the night doing the following: I checked both the top platter and heavy platter underneath for warpage. They both look good, and are in real good shape. I tried to remove the heavy platter without pulling the shaft out -- but to no avail. I ended up gently removing the platter and shaft together, I then separated the shaft from the platter. Surprisingly, still pleny of oil. This all looked good as well. Cosmetically speaking, the wood base looks pretty good too -- nothing I can't bring back to near perfect. The arm, as it turns out -- is the Shure M12 Dynetic Reproducer (1963), and there were only two cartdridges that would work in it (the M1 and M2). Needless to say -- no longer available. I'm completely bewildered as to how to remove the arm from the board. There is an ornamental plate that covers the screws attaching the arm to the board, and I can't for the life of me figure out how to remove it. The plate is just supposed to slide down the shaft onto the base -- but this thing almost seems like it's freaking welded in place. I guess I'll eventually figure it out. It still works the wheels, but it seems kind of sloppy to me. I have no manual, so I don't know the length of this belt. Surely there is a suitable replacement for it? The idler wheel looks O.K. too. The clutch mechanism does not stop the platter. Mechanically it seems fine, it just doesn't seem to push the metal strip up against the bottom of platter far enough. I'm thinking the small springs underneath, that support the clutching effort, have simply weakened over time. No evidence of corrosion anywhere, it just needs a good cleaning, and oil in critical parts. I've already read about how to take care of the main shaft and properly seat it. So, at this point -- I need to figure out the tonearm business. I get the impression the 3009 is 1/2 as old as I am. It sure doesn't appear to me that these are readily available. I need a solution that's fairly feesable.

I've had this thing for about 20 years. I ended up with it from a trade. After I got it, I couldn't find a cartridge for it. Then, couldn't find any info on it. Of course, this was before the Internet took off. I have no idea what to do with it. I will start by tearing it down and just making it pretty again. It DOES work, but the arm is useless. There is no vertical movement with the arm, it only goes back and forth. The cartridge would slide into the end, and there was a little push button on the end of the arm that one would push to raise the cartridge. So, what the hell do I do with this thing?

I used to think this too. I don't anymore. There are just too many things that don't add up. When I was comparing radical Islam and radical Christianity -- I was thinking of the Crusades and the Inquistions. The John Wayne mentality that thinks, "If you grab them by the balls, their minds will follow". Please don't misunderstand me -- acts of violence against civilians is warped. I'm not condoning it. I'm just saying I understand why they have resorted to it. I don't know what to think of "State Sponsored Terrorism", I mean, how much money does it really cost to strap some explosives to your chest, or take some classes on flying a plane, or driving a boat into a battleship. These are low budget, low tech operations. I would expect much more expensive and sophisticated operations if they were really being funded by big budgets. Iraq is a problem, but so is India, Pakistan, and North Korea.

Christos, I understand your point of view. What I don't understand is your accusation that Max has somehow violated some ethics or values by merely pointing out he left the club. Other than that -- he has not revealed anything, certainly not on a level that constitutes gossip. I do in part object to this idea that he has no right to share his thoughts on this forum regarding the club. The sabot rounds are wicked, no doubt about that. Nice shot. It's tough getting one of those with the animal straight on like that. There isn't much room for error. Did you know Germany petitioned at a Geneva Convention to mandate the U.S. quit using shotguns in the trenches. The Germans said the weapon was insidious, and that their doctors could not treat the wounds. The Los Angelos Police Department has a display set up consisting of kevlar vests. Each vest has been shot at with a different caliber, starting with the .22. There is no penetration until the .44 magnum. The 2nd to the last vest is from a 12 gauge shotgun using a slug. There is complete penetration, and the vest is peeled back like an orange. The last vest is from a crossbow, and the arrow went through like butter. Erik, The shunt circuit is something Kirk at Cary advocates. However, I had discussion with Dennis Had on the phone about it, and he doesn't like it one bit. He claims there is a perceived increase in bass response because the circuit supresses midrange output. Dennis feels it sucks the life out of the midrange.

Kelly, I wasn't aware that you had heard the RF5's. I can only say that the 2a3 is probably not the best choice to get the most out of the Reference speakers, especially if the amps are not wired to the 4 ohm taps on the transformers. Reference is a different animal altogether, and though efficient, they are not really the best choice for SET. Leo will be putting the Moondogs on his RF7's soon, and I'm very curious to see what he will find. I was surprised by his choice, but Leo knows his stuff, and so I guess there will be magic in the air.
