  1. Christos, I understand your point of view. What I don't understand is your accusation that Max has somehow violated some ethics or values by merely pointing out he left the club. Other than that -- he has not revealed anything, certainly not on a level that constitutes gossip. I do in part object to this idea that he has no right to share his thoughts on this forum regarding the club. This is a very tight knit group here, and we share just about everything except our underwear and our wives. I don't know what happened with the club and Max, and I really do not care so much. However, if Max wants to vent -- then his Klipsch Family is here to support him.
  2. In the howling wind comes a stinging rain See it driving nails Into the souls on the tree of pain From the firefly, a red orange glow See the face of fear Running scared in the valley below Bullet the blue sky Bullet the blue sky Bullet the blue Bullet the blue In the locust wind comes a rattle and hum Jacob wrestled the angel And the angel was overcome You plant a demon seed You raise a flower of fire See them burning crosses See the flames higher and higher Bullet the blue sky Bullet the blue sky Bullet the blue Bullet the blue This guy comes up to me His face red like a rose on a thorn bush Like all the colors of a royal flush And he's peeling off those dollar bills Slapping them down One hundred, two hundred And I can see those fighter planes And I can see those fighter planes Across the mud huts where the children sleep Through the alleys of a quiet city street You take the staircase to the first floor Turn the key and slowly unlock the door As a man breathes into a saxophone And through the walls you hear the city groan Outside is America Outside is America Across the field you see the sky ripped open See the rain through a gaping wound Pounding on the women and children Who run Into the arms Of America
  3. I never fare well on these type things. I was going to get the bus number, drive my friend and old lady where they needed to be, and find the bus! 4. Well, I did differentiate between 'radical' and 'mainstream'. I know several Muslims, one who is my friend. I haven't seen the barrel of a gun yet. Actually, President Carter's work at Camp David was pretty cool. The presidency as a whole had some problems, but the Peace Accord was awesome work on his part. We are at war with an unseen enemy, not the Muslim community. What the hell is wrong with you people? Where is the National Security Threat with Iraq? It sure ain't from a Scud Missile. If sneaking a small nuke into the country is a concern, maybe it's time we do more to secure our borders. Anyone look up April Glaspie yet? http://www.chss.montclair.edu/english/furr/glaspie.html
  5. The sabot rounds are wicked, no doubt about that. Nice shot. It's tough getting one of those with the animal straight on like that. There isn't much room for error. Did you know Germany petitioned at a Geneva Convention to mandate the U.S. quit using shotguns in the trenches. The Germans said the weapon was insidious, and that their doctors could not treat the wounds. The Los Angelos Police Department has a display set up consisting of kevlar vests. Each vest has been shot at with a different caliber, starting with the .22. There is no penetration until the .44 magnum. The 2nd to the last vest is from a 12 gauge shotgun using a slug. There is complete penetration, and the vest is peeled back like an orange. The last vest is from a crossbow, and the arrow went through like butter. A little bit of shotgun trivia from the resident gun nut.
  6. Cool. I know this is very difficult to do, but how would characterize the differences in their signatures (RF5/Cornwalls)?
  7. If you can wait a week -- I can tell you what I think. I had RB5's for a couple of years, and now have some Heresies on the way to me. I'll be writing about my impressions shortly.
  8. Erik, The shunt circuit is something Kirk at Cary advocates. However, I had discussion with Dennis Had on the phone about it, and he doesn't like it one bit. He claims there is a perceived increase in bass response because the circuit supresses midrange output. Dennis feels it sucks the life out of the midrange.
  9. Kelly, I wasn't aware that you had heard the RF5's. I can only say that the 2a3 is probably not the best choice to get the most out of the Reference speakers, especially if the amps are not wired to the 4 ohm taps on the transformers. Reference is a different animal altogether, and though efficient, they are not really the best choice for SET. Leo will be putting the Moondogs on his RF7's soon, and I'm very curious to see what he will find. I was surprised by his choice, but Leo knows his stuff, and so I guess there will be magic in the air.
  10. You must mean the RP3's, which are discontined. Yes, they sounded kind of thick and plodding.
  11. Yes, I'm a pacifist. No apologies. I have an aversion to dead people. You think doing this is a good idea huh? Think making a Martyr out of Saddam will make terrorism go away? Doing this will increase acts of terrorism in this nation by a factor of a 100, and destablize the whole region. We should have taken him out in 90, but we didn't -- why? Step back and look at the big picture. The goal of radical Islam isn't any different than radical Christianity. All radicals want their ideals to be the concepts with which the world is run. Mainstream Islam OTOH, is the same as mainstream Christianity -- live in peace with your brother, and know that your kingdom is not of this world. Allah is certainly not Yahweh, and both religons can't be right -- but that doesn't mean we can't get along until history unfolds and reveals the truth. Everyone prosletizes, even Atheists. Who cares? Everyone goes about the business of winning others to their belief system, and each has to make up their own mind. The bottom line however, is that no matter what system you are working under -- there are basic precepts we all agree on -- and we should live them out the best we can. The politcal issues are complex, and isolating any one point into a corner doesn't get it done. I will say it's ludicrous to believe that Saddam will drop a nuke. He may be ruthless, but he's not an idiot. I don't think he has any interest in seeing Iraq turned into a sea of glass. Maybe some of you would be willing to take some time and do some research on April Glaspie, and the meeting she had with Saddam before the Gulf war? Saddam told us he was going into Kuwait, and the official American response was, "We have no opinion on Arab to Arab conflicts". Two days later, Bush is on T.V. calling Saddam a "Hitler". It's about oil. It's always been about oil, and will always BE about oil. Again, William Baker's "Theft of a Nation", and President Carter's book -- "The Blood of Abraham" -- are both necessary reading material. As far as Bin Laden goes, why does he insist on wearing that U.S. Field Jacket? Sometimes I think Americans are the most politically ignorant people on the planet. The Eastern mind works off SYMBOLS and IMAGERY. Their thoughts work off PICTURES. THINK about it.
  12. Man Artto, you just slammed Obi Wan Kenobi. I bet he's right. It's not hard for me to imagine a Heathkit with tubes sounding better than SS. Synth, why don't you build a nice two channel system around those future Scalas? Using the 1050 as the preamp probably isn't the best idea. To be honest, $600 puts you in nice refurbised Scott or Eico territory -- or even a slightly used Jolida. All integrated tube amps -- and would work good with the Scalas.
  13. Not true. Einstein, as well as many other scientists, opposed the use of the bomb on simply moral grounds. Also, since Germany had already surrendered, many felt it simply did not need to be used. Truman however, recognized the fact that many American lives in the Pacific would be saved if the bomb was used. The bomb had been successfully tested three times at Alamogordo, New Mexico before it was used on Japan. There were no surprises, it performed as expected. I don't know where you read what you said, but it couldn't have been in the context of Hiroshima.
  14. Actually, it's not FUBAR, but SNAFU. The lack of any real Middle Eastern Foreign Policy for the last 25 years has brought us to this point. Any policy that fails to effectively deal with Israel's human rights violations, the confiscation of Palestinian land, the failure to address Israel's continued refusal to comply with U.N. Resolutions mandating their return to the pre-1967 borders, and the absence of any leadership in establishing a Palestinian State -- is really no policy at all. I can't help but feel that the extreme actions taken on the part of some Arabs/Muslims are largely due in part from a general feeling of hopelessness and despair. Because of this, their thinking has become convoluted and distorted, and so now the behavior follows the thinking. If Israel wants to have an Aparteid State -- fine. They certainly have the right to exist as they please. However, this should not prevent the world from recognizing the rights of Palestinians, who inhabited that land long before 1947. Palestinians also deserve to live within secure borders, to live as they please -- without having to worry about someone bulldozing their homes and schools.
  15. It's very simple. Saddam knows we are coming in specifically for him. If he has the weapons the Bush Administration says he has -- he will use them. He no longer has any incentive not to. As far as I'm concerned -- if these weapons are not utilized -- then we know the Bush Administration lied. This whole thing is about gaining control of desert oil. The ultimate cost to Americans will be in the form of body bags. It will be especially interesting to see if Bush can pull this off without pulling in the surrounding Muslim Nations, who historically -- will put away tribal disputes and divisions -- for the purpose of uniting against a foreign aggressor. This is a very bad idea. The real irony here is that Bin Laden's true aim with 911 -- was specifically for this very purpose. He KNEW we would respond the way we did, and was hoping for all Muslim's to unite together against "The Great Satan". So now, Bush will do for Bin Laden, what Bin Laden could not do for himself with 911. You can trust me on this. The surrounding Muslim Nations will not just sit on their hands this time around.
  16. It will be interesting to see what you think. Make sure you have enough room in your car. You'll be walking out with the RF5's.
  17. Made in 1979. If they are in really good shape you should be able to get at least $400 out of them. You can sell them here.
  18. Theres something happening here What it is aint exactly clear Theres a man with a gun over there Telling me I got to beware I think its time we stop, children, whats that sound...... Everybody look whats going down Theres battle lines being drawn Nobodys right if everybodys wrong Young people speaking their minds Getting so much resistance from behind I think its time we stop, hey, whats that sound..... Everybody look whats going down What a field-day for the heat A thousand people in the street Singing songs and carrying signs Mostly say, hooray for our side Its time we stop, hey, whats that sound Everybody look whats going down Paranoia strikes deep Into your life it will creep It starts when youre always afraid You step out of line, the man come and take you away.... We better stop, hey, whats that sound Everybody look whats going down Stop, hey, whats that sound Everybody look whats going down Stop, now, whats that sound Everybody look whats going down Stop, children, whats that sound Everybody look whats going
  19. Imagine everything you ever really wanted in a speaker. That's the RF7.
  20. Kartracer77 Now, what makes you think I would give up a FREE pair of DQ-10's? These are already on there way to me. I figured I would work the magic on them in my spare time. These are in VERY bad shape. See the attached picture. These look like they've been stored in a cave for the last 10 years. Both woofers are shot. Not just the surrounds either. The guy says he hears 'scaping' sounds while they're playing. So, the voice coils are probably toast. I will have to buy new woofers. The midwoofers are for the most part shot. The rubber surrounds are cracked, and splitting -- all the way through on one of the drivers. I will have to find someone to rebuild them for me. There are no legs or stands. He says the wood rails look really beat up. I may not be able to save them. I can't get anything definitive on the tweeters, except that the "fuses are intact". I have enough parts left over from the last fiasco to rebuild both crossovers. Basically, Solen and NTE aluminum housed resistors. Nothing fancy like the last pair, but it will have to suffice -- because funds are limited. I may not even bother restoring the grills. They are junk to begin with, and there is the little known fact that 8% of all sound output from the drivers -- hits the mesh screen from the grill, and bounces back into the forward path of the output, causing some cancellation effects. Since I won't be using the grills, I may put more focus on asthetics. I may do away with the masonite baffles, and instead use a very intert, hard and resiliant form of clear plastic resin. I'll probably do something more interesting with the brackets as well. Lot's of new ideas, and when I'm done -- maybe you can make me an offer I can't refuse. These will probably be used to help finance some other insane "upgrade".
  21. Sounds like you have ears like mine. I heard the LSi9's. I liked them, but not enough to own them. Once your ears get dialed in to the low level detail and macrodynamics of the horn, everything else just sounds kind of compressed and sucked in -- like the music's being pulled back into some black hole. It's tough not to like a two-way, and the a two way with a horn tweet gives you the best of both worlds. You are are thinking of the RP3 and RP5, which were powered. The RF3II and RB5II are passive. The RF3II is a floorstander with two eights, and the RB5II is a monitor with one eight. I like the RB5II better, but that's just me. It's tight and fast, and has a real wood finish. The RF3II will give you lower bass extension, but doesn't sound quite as coherent through the midrange as the RB5II, and has a vinyl finish. They both cost the same. RF5 at $1500 retail is a nice step up. Compared to the RF3, is a little taller, a little more efficient, goes a little bit lower, has a bit more fine tuning in the crossover, weighs 4 lbs more, has a 2" bigger horn, and has a real wood finish. I think you would be pretty much blown away by any of the above. I ran RB5's with a sub for two years, and still believe there isn't ANYTHING on the market that can even remotely compete with that sound at the same pricepoint.
  22. I certainly don't have any intention of putting myself in the line of fire of those squawkers. I will probably toe them in just tad, and listen to them off axis somewhat. I'm almost sure I'm not going to stand mount them, but will instead take advantage of the risers and simply sit them on the floor. This should work just fine for movies, as I don't expect to much music listening on this system. It would take a completely jaw dropping experience to peel me away from the RF7's and Apollos.
  23. I've already shared this with Kelly and Craig, and thought the rest of you would get a kick out of it. As I was sitting at work Sunday, this email popped into my inbox. TO: Dgwescott Hey Dg, saw the nice work you did on those Dahlquists. Don't know if you are interested, but I have acquired a pair of DQ-10's and you can have them for free if you want, just pay for shipping. They are boxed in the original boxes and could probably be shipped as-is. Woofer on one appears to be out, but the other speaker seems ok. - anyway if you are interested, just let me know. It seems there is no escape from these things. God help me.
  24. Doesn't surprise me really. Without tubes pushing those things they probably do sound brutal. I take a lot of punishment here on the forum because of my views on the horn midrange. Where I for the most part can't stand the sound of them, most others here would rather die than give them up. The argument always goes something like this: The majority of music is in the midrange. Having a speaker that plays the midrange through cones, defeats the whole purpose of having horns. I'm getting ready to give Heresies a chance in my other system. Well, the 'other' system is for the most part gone. The DQ's are gone, and I just sold the preamp. I still need to move the Aragon. The new system will simply be a refurbished Scott tube integrated, Marantz DVD player, one SVS sub -- and the Heresies. I'm preparing for the worst, and hoping for the best. I've got two pillows ready, thinking I might have to throw them in front of the speakers to make them bearable:) It will be interesting to see what I think. I do think the tubes will make a big difference. How big of a difference is the question. The new Polks sound "pleasent", but they don't sound "right" to me. They are just WAY to laid back, lacking in dynamics, and pretty short on resolving power. You REALLY should try to hear the RF3II's or the RB5II's. I believe either of these dust the Polks pretty good, without making you feel like you're getting to much of a good thing. You could probably easily work out a trade here for some RF3's. Just curious. What are you using for amplification?
  25. this forum product stinks
