  1. When SS state amps go beyond their rated power, they immediately go into pure distortion. The "clipping" is extremely dirty and unforgiving. When a tube amp goes beyond it's rated power, the clipping is very subtle, and usually not even noticable. It takes some serious cranking on the volume control before it's audible.
  2. There was extensive discussion of this at The Asylum some time ago when I asked the same question. The thing you need to remember is that since bass involves long pressure waves, it's not just the floor that is resonating. The walls and ceiling also resonate. Also, since the walls are coupled to the floor, any resonances exhibited by the walls, feed back through the floor and ceiling due to the coupling. The situation is exacerbated due to most subs being placed in a corner. The simplest solution is to get the sub out of the corner if you don't need the addional boost in SPL received from the coupling. HSU Research recommends placing the sub next to the listening position. This will cut down on the amount of resonance. Another solution involves "mass loading". It's nice to put something solid under the sub, but the greatest benefits are received by putting something solid and heavy on TOP of the sub.
  3. Gee, I kinda liked the wood base:)
  4. Yea, you can see where this one is going
  5. I am curious. What cables seem to respond best with horns? Please, keep it under $10,000 a pair.
  6. Since the Margules Acrh-1 is $1400, how did it get on your "short list", if you are looking for an amp in the $500 range? Just curious.
  7. Lynnm and BBB, please stop! Youall be scarin the $hit outta me.
  8. See how you are? Dag gone pickey perfectionist:) As one who has spent the last 3 months going through this damn restoration bit -- I can tell you there is at least $300 worth of labor in that thing. No, the paint job is not the greatest, but it's not bad either. Good spray-painting is tough to pull off, and if you'll look at this amp again, you can see that someone took their time and at least tried to do a good job. The paint is not wrinkled or bubbled. This means they "dusted" it with several coats. Also, if there had been pitting or rust you would see it under the paint, especially on the transformers (which are clean, clean, clean). The underside of the amp looks really clean, and the wiring is laid out in a fashion that also looks like some care was taken. As far as the crimp ons go -- some people believe it's superior to soldering. The wood case may not have been built by a craftsman, but it was certainly built by someone who thought the amp deserved one. To me -- it just looks like something someone thought enough about to take care of, and for $375 -- it sure isn't like they are trying to rip anyone off. They'd probably take $350 -- and someone will have a decent tube amp. With all due respect Master Yoda -- try to see the bright side of things:)
  9. http://cgi.audiogon.com/cgi-bin/cl.pl?ampstube&1038982606 Somebody buy this thing before I do.
  10. "I hear dead people's stereos" ROTFLOL, that's rich.
  11. Instead of upgrading all of the time, when the urge hits -- maybe we should just pull out our old boxes and plastic wrap and have a good sniff session.
  12. I'm kind of taking a different approach. I'm in the market for some of them cones. You know, the kind you set your gear on. I'm having some trouble making up my mind. I don't know if I want the $500 cones, or the $50 cones. I'm bummed, because I might have to buy ALL the cones to see which ones "sound" the best. So... ...I've just decided I'm not buying any cones, unless they are THX certified.
  13. That's pretty cool. I'm suprised that these things work with me, since I don't have binocular vison.
  14. Even when we have 'no life' -- deep down we're all 'newbies':)
  15. I would love a set of Wellbourne Labs monoblocks. The only problem is they hardly ever show up, and when they do -- they be gone! I'd have to sleep next to the computer and the AudiogoN site, with my finger taped to the mouse. I may opt for patience -- but these folks are less than 2 miles from my house. He (Patrick) has already offered to bring the 300b stereoblock to my house, and let me borrow it for the weekend. I'm just one of them people -- if I get that thing in here -- It's staying. Knowing this, I declined the offer (it killed me, really). After I've thought this out, and if the SuperAmp sells, I'll have him bring it over for a listen. The main thing here is that I'm looking at a major convenience/security issue in the customer service area. If it blows up and catches on fire -- I drive down the street. No decisions until you guys are done bombarding me:)
  16. Now, I never said Mobile was a "fanatic". I said he was a "perfectionist". I didn't mean it as a negative.
  17. Jazzman, you're good. I'm not ready for 2A3 yet. I guess I'm just a coward. I'm taking a hard look at this: http://www.midwest-audio.com/pages/755440/index.htm However, no moves until all input is received from Kelly and Fellow Forum Members. I guess that would be Kelly & Co. Kelly, now wait a minute, weren't YOU the one that started this whole thing last year by telling ME I was way too hung up on the power thing. Something about your Moondogs being able to shake the very foundations of the earth:) I won't budge on the AE-25. I can't. If I go lower I can't afford the upgrade. Besides, I've got quite a bit invested in the NOS tubes. So, I MAY end up having to keep the SuperAmp -- but thankfully, that is not a bad thing. Rich Text Editor stinks. I can't get it to work half the time for me. Anyone else having problems with it?
  18. There should be nothing surprising here. I've said many times that most of my "heavy" listening is actually done at low to moderate volume levels. I may like to do some Metallica from time to time, but it's not like I'm assaulting my hearing when I do it. If you'll remember, I originally went with the SuperAmp after comparing it to the Bryston. I simply went with what sounded better. My problem with the stock SuperAmp was that I couldn't get enough drive during movies/dvd's. It sounded fine, though somewhat weak. So I remedied that by getting the DJH version -- and have in fact been happy ever since. I'm certainly not selling it because I think there is a problem. We are moving things around in the house. We have new carpet in the basement, and have actually been spending quite a bit of time down there. I'll be building the second system there, and moving the T.V. as well. So, it will be DQ's, big amp, SVS sub, television, dartboard, hang around, family area. The livingroom is being transitioned to "the quiet room". Books and Chairs. Something else I like to do, but don't talk about it much. I like Sci-Fi, King, Koontz, history, and of course...that Book. So, I think I'll be O.K. with 8 watts upstairs:)
  19. Kelly, sometimes you trip me out. I'll have a set of fully restored (Rel Cap PPMFX Mulitcaps, Mills resistors, Madisound inductors, rewired with .9999 OFC) and modified (Scan-Speak 2010 tweeters) DQ-10's, being driven by a 200 watt dual mono monstrosity and AE-3. What the hell do I need a ultralinear amp for:) Shall we try this again? S imple E volutionary T ransition
  20. I don't deny they make a positive difference. I just don't appreciate the wild, ridiculous claims. I received a catalog in the mail recently where the editor said their cables made $100 Radio Shack speakers sound better than other cables on a pair of high-end speakers. Think I'll run out and get those Radio Shack speakers right away!
